This year marks Mubarak's 82'nd birthday, and he must stand for re-election at the end of 2010.

Even raising questions of his health or stability got one Egyptian Journalist jailed.

But for what its worth, Egypt has no clear successor when he is rumored to be in poor health at a time of rising political discontentment.

But Turkey may certainly qualify. And Post Shah Iran also managed the post Shah succession question after Ayottallah #1 died. I can never remember how to spell his name, so I never name him.

But still, the Egyptian succession question may prove huge for the mid-east. If nothing else, Mubarak took awhile to consolidate power, but Egypt has done fairly well meanwhile.

Point granted Kadarin, I should have said economically. But if you are going to bring up woman's rights issues in the mid-east, why not aim straight at Saudi Arabia, that other great US ally.
