Watchdog groups are asking the predominantly Sunni Muslim nation to reconsider its stance toward atheists after authorities arrested a student and sentenced him to three years in prison for Facebook posts that insulted Islam.

Given what recently has happened in France, this seems to not be about atheism but anti-Islam.

This may be an advocate group that is twisting the explanation.

How can you insult a religion, prophet or god?

AKA... What does god need with a star ship?

Glad I don't live there. Religious extremists seem like such fragile people; living in a place where they have power must be awful. I mean, look, if your God is really as strong as you say he is, then you really shouldn't care if I talk shit about him; he'll get me back.

Atheists should not be punished in Egypt or anywhere.

It might be nice to look at their Constitution however.

Freedom of belief is absolute.

The freedom of practicing religious rituals and establishing worship places for the followers of Abrahamic religions is a right regulated by Law.

You can believe and practice any Abrahamic religion. Being an atheist does not give a legal right to blaspheme. Someone could be an atheist but as soon as they start attacking any of the Abrahamic religions then they are breaking the law.

What this law allows is for freedom of religious practice within the stated ones, however it does not grant freedom of speech. It's important to note the difference from a legal perspective.

Someone should wipe their ass with that piece of paper they wrote then.

The Soviet Union's constitution had freedom of speech, press, and religion.

Things written down on paper mean jack squat if unenforced.

Sure...

Freedom to praise the state, the party, and communism. Freedom to blast the evil imperialists of the US. Freedom to attend state controlled churches. Freedom to vote even! For communist party Komrade A or communist party Komrade B.

Given that France just did similar to someone for a Facebook post about a different religion why would you expect any different from Egypt?
