3. Poisoned power-ups
With its Mario-killing mushrooms and warp zones that launched you back to earlier points in the game, the real sequel to SMB was deemed too tricky for American gamers, so instead Nintendo inserted new characters into a game called Doki Doki Panic and released it as SMB2.

WTF?

I prefered EGM's top 100 list a couple years back.

It seemed a lot more... authentic, like they didn't just put games on there because they "needed" to be on there, they actually put the top games.
No "pong" or "(original) Zelda" in the top 10, in the top 10 were actually some of the best games ever created up to that point.

Not just the nostalgic ones.

That, and Super Metroid had #1

"I still clearly remember church Sunday school the day after I got my NES back in 1986. Our teacher made each kid announce aloud something in their life that they thanked God for. Of course, I thanked God for Super Mario Bros. with the utmost sincerity."

It seems EGM defined greatest as being the most influential, innovative, commercially successful or most played during its time period.

Even with that said, Sonic the Hedgehog, at 56 is vastly under-rated. Sega's most commercially successful franchise character is a household name for gawd sakes.

Trip down memory lane. I've only played a handful, but I feel like playing them some more now.

It's not the "Top 200 Greatest Games Ever".
It's the "Greatest 200 Videogames of Their Time"
There's a difference. That's why Pong and the like are way up there.

That list sucks ass, Mario 64 shouldn't be in the top 50 let alone the top 10

as of its time it was a great game.

the physics did need work, sometimes, though.
