<< Sources inside the credit card industry have reportedly said that as many as 3.7 million card numbers may have been stolen. Egghead.com has not confirmed any credit card number thefts. >>

Tis the season to commit credit card fraud 🙁

When are companies gonna get smart and offer an option for accounts NOT to store their credit card in their database? "one-click" shopping isn't worth it, and we should have a choice.

For what it's worth, I have an egghead account and I had 6 unauthorized charges this past month.

TheDennis,

It's not really all that risky. You just need to find places that aren't clueless (cough, egghead) and don't store the credit card information for every account (rather than just a temporary ordering queue or something).

Admittedly, I had an egghead account despite my protests to this policy. I couldn't resist the free shipping I guess. Shame on me, I've learned my lesson.

Yo TheDennis, man you should definitely not avoid it because it's too risky. The bonuses far outweigh the risks. I just built a computer for half of what it would have cost to get someone to build it for me. Or you could check out the one time credit card numbers that are offered for free by MBNA or Amex credit cards. There's really no risk there at all. You should hurry up and get in on the deals before all of these dotcoms start closing.

Come on people, The chances of your CC# getting stolen over the internet are less likely than the following

#1 Someone from the credit card company taking your #
#2 A clerk at a store taking your # (which I know happens 🙁
#3 Someone taking your wallet

So, its not as risky as everyone thinks

Still feel comfortable canceling and getting a new one. :] all my x-mas stuff is paid for so I can deal without a card till next wens :]

Not to add to the paranoia, but the company I work for sometimes receives orders that are placed using stolen credit card numbers (which we cancel and attempt to inform the credit card holder). We do not store credit card info (we don't even see it, it's authorized off site). We do check out suspicious orders and patterns often emerge (same or similar "send to" address, same or similar email address with different billing addresses, etc). One person who was almost scammed had dined @ a NYC restaurant, used the credit card, and three months later their card was used in an attempt to buy goods from my company.
