EGeforce 6800gt NEED HELP

I just got in my Evga E-Geforce 6800GT 256ddr to replace my ATI 7200 W/64mb ddr. I have been working on computers for many years but this has me stumped. When I install the new card the first difference i Notice is that there are little white lines all over the screen kinda like starbursts. second is that it will shut down my system after a few min of running. I have the power plug in and all but cant figure it out.

Here is my Mobo.

TIA for the help.

system specs? most important your power supply? maybe it's not getting enough juice. 6800GT needs a fair amount, i was using a 380 Watt when I had my 6800GT and it was working fine.

CPU: AMD XP 2400+ Stock HSF
Video Current: ATI 7200 w/ 64mb DDR
Trying to isntall : Evga E-Geforce 6800GT
Mobo: Biostar M7VIT Pro with updated bios
Hdds: ST340016A & WDC WD1600JB-00GVA0
Ram: 2x 512mb ddr
PS: Allied 350watt came with my case

If the GPU isn't getting enough power a lot can go wrong.

Given your situation, I suspect one of two problems may be the cause:

1) Your PSU isn't cutting the mustard
2) You got a bad video card

It's probably one of the above. To figure out which is the culprit, either use a differant PSU on your system, or, try the video card in a differant system with a beefy PSU (perhaps you have a friend who's willing to give it a try).

Im hoping for the first one as it would be cheaper. Ill have to call around and see who i can find.

My bet is on the PSU. Looks like no one even wants to post the 12v rail output on the 'net..

You could look on the side of the PSU, you're prolly gonna want at least 20amps output on the 12v. rail. I doubt its that strong.

Look in your 6800GT manual, what's it say as far as recommended PSU output? I bet its higher than 350watts 😉

Yeah, "Allied" isn't exactly famous for being a quality PSU maker (and 350watts is probably borderline for a 6800GT). Then again, it could just be a bad video card... 10-to-1 it's one of those two things.

Fortran, Antec, PC Power & Cooling, Enermax... any PSU of 400w or over from one of those manufacturers should do the trick. (Being as your current PSU is an "Allied" PSU, I wouldn't even rate it as a reliable 350w PSU, which is why I recomend a 400w or more from a good PSU manufacturer). If you want to be "a cheap bastard" on PSU's, the best "budget" PSUs probably come from Enlight.

Do you guys think, even if he does get the 6800GT up, that he will be CPU limited?
Not really... having a faster GPU is a lot more important for gaming then a faster CPU. While an AMD XP 2400+ isn't exactly cutting-edge, it's "fast enough"... it's not like he's trying to pair a 6800GT with a 1GHz P3. Also, realize the 6800GT isn't cutting edge either... it's a couple of years old now, and if he put the same card in the same system two years ago, nobody would question it. The card and the CPU are a fairly decent match.

Nah, I've run my 6800GT with my cpu set at 2500+ speeds and again at (over) 3200+ speeds. I couldn't see a difference with the naked eye.

Seems as if the PS was the problem as I went to my local shop and tryed out a 480 watt one and it ran good with no reboots. The tech had never seen anything like it. Kept tryin to tell me that it was a bad card. Told him it worked when it left the last owner. So i ordered thisone. It will come in tomorrow after 2. so i should be up and runnin before dinner time.... THANKS FOR ALL THE HELP GUYS AND GALS...
