:(

I've always been a huge efnet fan, I hung out in several efnet channels, but it seems like in the last year its gotten progressively worse. :|

I used to love IRC too and EFnet was the place to be. But yeah, it sucks now.

It's just a netsplit. I rarely visit efnet, so I don't know how often they occur. That happens sometimes on the dalnet, which is where I usually hang out.

all of IRC sucks as of late... you cant login to any efnet servers anymore without having identd installed.. and undernet is populated with a bunch of immature children... blah.

You think Undernet is bad? Dalnet is 3x worse if you ask me.

I totally agree with a login identd-mandatory check. The amount of insecure proxies out there is incredible, and this is one surefire way to keep them off the channels.

#konich-chat? What do you do, preach to 'em in there? ;)

Sigh..

While that log means absolutely nothing (netsplits will, and will always happe), EFnet is sucking in the last 6 months (or more).

Why? Mostly due to a combination of DoS, and far, far, too many admins that just stopped caring. Efnet WILL fragment, it's just a matter of time. It's just been sad to watch the demise of something that used to be so great. I think the underlying cause is that it's just not fun anymore. It used to be fun for the admins, and they got enjoyment/fulfillment from providing such a valuable service. But then smurf (the first real DoS capable of toppling the entire networks of the IRC servers. i.e. eating into other revenue streams) came along and things started to get un-fun as they had to defend the existance of this server that caused so many problem to their managers. I honestly don't know how some admins can keep their servers going any longer, with te just huge amounts of DoS going against them. It seems pretty much only massively large companies (glbx, exodus, concentric, etc.), large educational institutions, and the semi-large regional backbone providers (lightning.net, core.com, etc.) who's owners/upper level management love IRC will be the ones with the capacity to host a server any longer.

That sucks, EFnet was built on small local ISP's that had a few T1's coming in. Sigh.

As for getting on EFnet? Get the server admins in your back pocket. :) I co-locate an EFnet admin's box, so we have I lines from that. Also get a local server to add I lines for you, most will.

Ah well.. IRC will never completely die. Too many people use it as a valuable tool for communication and just general help.

peace,

-Phil

I know what you mean Phil. I figure part of the problem is the propagation of high speed home connections all over the place. Undernet actually just disconnected the New Brunswick server for good two weeks ago, a very mournful affair. :(

Although this is flame-worthy, I wish some of the admins in countries like Romania and Norway would finally get their sh*t together. The channels I reside in on Undernet have been hammered to hell and back by losers using proxies in mainly these two countries.

Oh well, at least I can take satisfaction in the fact that since Efnet and then Undernet have been attacked, it's probably now Dalnet's turn. ;)
