EFI-X attaches to your motherboard's USB header and lets you simply drop in a Leopard disk and so long as your hardware is compatible, boot as if it was a real Mac. The hacked ISOs instead have modified either kernels, or drivers (actually kernel extensions on OS X) that trick the OS into installing on unsupported hardware.

You basically have 3 options:

1. Hacked Leopard installation (Kalyway, Leo4All, JaS, iATKOS, etc.)
2. Retail Leopard installation for tinkers (Boot-132)
3. Retail Leopard installation for noobs (EFI-X)

The Hacked Leopard method is easy, free method. Just find a good guide and follow it, but updates are kind of a hassle because you typically have to re-install drivers and patch the update in a funny way. Boot-132 is great, but it's a bit more effort unless, again, you can find a good guide. EFI-X is $170, but it's dirt simple and requires no technical knowledge aside from being able to screw a computer together. I have installation, s with all 3 methods. I do like Boot-132, but only because I have a 100% compatible motherboard. I am running EFI-X in my main system and I really like it. Very stable, no hassles, regular updates. The only issue is that you have to pay for it, which when compared to a single-processor Mac Pro is really not bad at all ($2300 for the base quad-core single-processor Mac Pro vs. $170 for EFI-X + some PC parts).

Ultimately you have to ask yourself: Where do I want to spend my time?

If it's tinkering with a computer, go with Boot-132 or a Hacked Leopard installation. If you want a rig that "just works" and want someone else to do the work for your (i.e. continuous firmware updates), then get an EFI-X chip. I like both methods, but that's because I want a working machine as my workstation (EFI-X) and I enjoy tinkering with computers as a hobby (Boot-132 & Hacked Leopard).

When someone gets OSX working in a VMWare session, I'll be all over it. I don't like dual booting. But this is a great hack nonetheless.

I use Kalyway myself. Getting it up to date is a bit of a PITA; there's a modified 10.5.2->10.5.3 updater just for Kalyway, and then you can use the official Apple delta updates for 10.5.4 and 10.5.5, but that still requires some command line tinkering to keep it from installing an extension that borks the OS. I would imagine someone out there has a pre-packaged 10.5.5 installer that would be better suited.

It's been done. It's not very high performing as I understand it, however.

You have a DS3L board, so the Boot-132 method is the best for you. Sent you a PM!
