Efficient PSU for less than 20w NAS system?

Hi all!

I'm new to this forum and this is my first thread. I have been thinking of building really low power NAS box with four WD RED drives. System would be either AMD kabini or Intel bay trail based. What I have been able to gather, the system power consumption either of these would be less than 10w in idle and 10-20w in full power mode. When you add the four red drives that would be 20w more in worst case idle scenario. So depending the raid mode, power consumption of the system would be 15-30w in idle, which would be the most common operation state for normal NAS box.

To make things interesting is choosing the PSU for the system, which has high enough efficiency at 10-20w power draw. Now days all power units are way too big for seriously low power systems and you can only dream about platinum graded small PSUs. PicoPSU has efficiency about 75-77% at 20w power draw, but it's expensive and not enough cables for hard drives, if you are thinking about expanding your NAS to 6-8 drive system.

So my question is, is the any better solution than this Seasonic SS-350TGM 80 Plus Gold TFX way too big, but still relatively high efficient PSU at 22w power draw? I would guess that 150-200w PSU at the same tech as this seasonic would give something like 84% of efficiency at 20w power draw. I've tried to google something like that, but without any luck.

picopsu, and use sata splitters / HDD Backplane.. if ur serious about efficiency.

Your still not putting a lot of wattage by adding those drives.

Its about 1.78Amps per drive... even if u added 6 of them, you wouldn't exceed the max raiting on the wires.

Also i dont think u will find a tiny case which can't handle a full sized psu, if your thinking of adding 6 x 3.5inch HDD, so possibly a full sized PSU might be a better option, and just forget about the marginal efficiency.

There are ITX psu's for small form factor, but those are expensive too.

So a better response from me is, what case you intend to use... and then if it can take a full sized standard PSU, id get that and forget about the marginal efficiency, which translates to like ~ 10W at worst, yet you get the accessibility of a full sized PSU.

However the PICO PSU wins in noise, if noise is a concern, but again... if u have 6 drives in a box, i dont think you'll care about PSU noise.
