Effectiveness of bombs in outerspace...

her209

No Lifer
They wouldn't be very effective due to the fact that outerspace is a vacuum, correct? However, you may still get hit by the shrapnel.

From what I remember, most of the damage comes from the pressure wave as a result of an explosion, so I would imagine a bomb in space wouldn't have the same results on earth.

Of course they work, so long as its an explosive based on photons. Don't tell me you haven't seen those things fvck up a Klingon Warbird.

LMAO!!! awesome!

There will be some 'shockwave' effect up close due to the expanding explosive. It wouldn't go as far as it would in an atmosphere, but the explosive is going to have at least some effective radius, I'd think.

I agree. Also, if it's nuclear, you can always rely on the EMP. I think Russia detonated the "Tsar Bomba" in space once. I don't know what they were testing for, or how they tested for it.

Which doesn't mean explosives are useless, just that they would need to be designed to penetrate a ship's hull then explode. Or be like modern / future anti-armor ordnance where the explosion creates a directed spike of plasma ("shaped charge").

1) Make outer space bomb
2) Detonate randomly in outer space
3) ...
4) Profit?

bombs would still work cause of newton's law.. every action has an equal and opposite reaction.

that is why standard rocket engines still work in space. therefore, the force from the explosion of a bomb could still do damage.
