Last night I brought my Quantum LM downstairs to test out in my va-503+/Cyrix system, and I removed the DDO, since it was no longer needed. Now, I have put the LM back in my P83 system, and I can't put the DDO back on, it won't let me! In disk manager the drive is "Translated"..

When I boot with a win98 bootdisk and go to fdisk, it recognizes C: as PRI DOS, A (active), and has the correct amount of space, etc..

So the disk itself is working fine, but my BIOS only supports up to 8.4GB.. and it is just not working, it says something like Disk I/O error! This is very frustrating... I Don't want to have to lose everything again, I've got alot of work on my review, alot of software I've installed since I put it in the cyrix, etc...

So could someone please shed some light for me? Anybody have some suggestions? I know there must be a way to get this to work.. please help.. thanks.

I hope you don't have anything important on that drive?
First check that the H.D. parameters are exactly right in the bios, either by autodetecting or entering them manually.

From Quantum:

I received a DDO Error from Disk Manager, can you tell me what it means?

DDO Error Messages.
Solution:
The "DDO Integrity Error", "DDO I/O Error" or "Missing O/S Error" should be considered as the symptom of a problem rather than a problem itself.
Disk Manager's Dynamic Drive Overlay (DDO) is stored in the Master Boot Record (MBR), which is located at the beginning, or non-data area of the hard drive. DDO is loaded during the boot sequence, prior to loading DOS. The integrity error indicates that something has corrupted this area. The good news is that almost all DDO errors can be solved without the loss of the valuable data.
TYPICAL CAUSES:
Booting the computer with a NON-DOS (could also be bootable) diskette in the floppy drive. This won't be a problem unless the there is a virus on the floppy disk. A boot-sector virus overwrites the MBR.
Failed program installation, or "freeze up" typically when in Windows.
Power spikes or turning off the computer when the hard drive is being written to.
Hardware failure. (Could be an intermittent problem.)
SOLUTIONS:
Disk Manager 7.xx or greater:
Boot with clean (virus-free) DOS bootable diskette in the A drive.
Insert the Disk Manager diskette, type "DM" and press Enter.
Select "Maintenance Menu".
Choose "Write Boot Code In MBR".
Select "Update Dynamic Drive Overlay".
Press Enter to save.
OPTIONAL:
Disk Manager 7.xx or greater:
Boot with clean (virus-free) DOS bootable diskette in the A drive.
Insert the Disk Manager diskette, type "dm" and press Enter.
Press ALT+M to enter manual mode.
Select "Edit/View Partitions".
Press ENTER on Drive 1.
Line 1 should show "*DOS/FAT"
If it does, press "W" to re-write the partition information. Press ENTER to save.
NOTE: If you have more than one drive, repeat for the other drives.
CRITICALLY IMPORTANT!!! If there is NO * (asterisk) press ESC and answer "NO" to "Save Changes?" >> DO NOT << "Save Changes" or attempt any other techniques to repair this! At this point, call Ontrack Tech Support for assistance while at the PC.
Exit Disk Manager and re-boot the PC.
Again, this is just repairing the symptom (by rewriting the MBR). If the actual cause (virus, hardware, etc.) is not addressed, the error will re-occur. It is recommended that a current virus scanner be obtained so that all floppy diskettes, including data diskettes can be checked.

Thanks for the reply...

I will try that out, although I don't think it will solve the problem... because I removed the dynamic drive overlay, so I can't 'update' it, it tells me there is notihng to be updated!!

Maybe try removing (deleting) it again and resetting it up? (total data loss as you know)

Removing what? The partition?

I'm not sure I want to try anything that has to do with formatting or partitioning, because I might still not be able to get the ddo back.. right now I can't update or remove it.. it says there are no drives installed using the ddo (which is true), and when I go uninstall it says there are no drives needing uninstallation (true as well).

When I boot up it just says Disk I/O Error replace disk and press any key...

I should have left the ddo on.. arghh I can't believe I did this.. what the hell do I do now.. :(

Can you put the DDO on a boot floppy and access the data this way. Many 'Drive Overlays' allow this. This may be slow, but at least you could back-up your important files. Also, there is a program kicking around the net to backup and restore the MBR. Maybe you could put the overlay on another drive, backup the MBR, and restore it to your drive. This may work, but some overlays move the 'real' mbr to an unused spot on the first track, and re-direct calls to the mbr to this moved mbr. LOL.

Thanks, I'll try that...

but assume I can get the ddo on a disk.. then even if I can somehow backup my hd, how will I get the ddo back on the drive?

Wait a minute....You had an overlay installed on your P83, you removed it and installed the drive in your Cyrix which has no problem with large drives, then you installed a bunch of software ect....Now you want to take this drive with all your software on it and install a drive overlay on your P83????
You can't....
In the process of setting up an overlay the drive will get wiped.

Best thing now for your data is to put it back in the Cyrix.

That can't be.... there must be a way!!

Yes that's exactly what I did... I don't want to put it back in the Cyrix, I just put everything back together! Damnit..

Well could I at least get the Quantum working again in my P83, even at the cost of data loss?

You should be able to... just run the install program for the overlay by first booting from a DOS/win9x boot disk. It *should* let you install it, although it may (probably) want you to repartiton or reformat the hard drive.

You're too late :)

I can't believe I actually got it working... I don't know why or how either, it just sort of worked.

It started saying "Error loading OS" instead of "Disk I/O Error", so I went back into Disk Manager, updated MBR code once again, and I was able to put the DDO back! No data loss! Woohoo! :)
