EEEPC 901 Windows problem

So I have a 20GB EEEPC901 with a custom install of XP on it. Now I don't know what it is... but every so often it has this problem where it boots into bios, but as soon as it starts loading windows (blank screen with blinking cursor), it reboots back to startup. And it loops like this forever until you kill power. The last couple of times it happened I fixed it by reformatting, but right now the EEEPC is on loan so I'm wondering if there's another way to fix it.

The person I loaned it out to said that right before the problem happened, they closed the laptop lid (which I suppose set it to sleep/hibernate), and after that it wouldn't boot anymore. I'm wondering if its a sleep problem. Either way, not sure how to get out of it.
