I picked up an EEE PC 1000H at Best Buy a couple weeks ago for a pretty good price ($329). I'm still within my 14 days, and I noticed today in class that the screen was rapidly changing its brightness. Not because of any sort of inactivity, or any power saving feature. I'd just be reading something, and I'd notice the screen's brightness changing rapidly. It doesn't do it constantly, I just noticed it 4 or 5 times during the course of 3 hours.

Should I take it back to Best Buy? A flickering screen is probably never a good sign, and I'm sure they're going to try to insist there's nothing wrong with it, as it doesn't do it the whole time it's on. But I've read about a lot of people having awful luck returning actual defective items back to Best Buy and getting nailed the 15% restocking fee.

If I do take it back, should I bend over and accept the 15% restocking fee, or raise a stink? I'm certain I noticed a flickering, I'm just worried that their infallible Geek Squad will deem it not defective.

Note: I never would have bought it at Best Buy, but the price was right. I try to avoid buying high ticket items from them.

Another Note: Everything is currently up to date. Drivers, Windows updates, etc, etc. I'm confident it's not a software issue.

I did some Googling, and I didn't get an overwhelming response, though I do get some results of screen flicker, and keys double tapping (which I thought was just me, turns out it's not).

I didn't know the 1000HE's were just around the corner when I bought it, so, if BB is willing to give a refund, I will gladly preorder a 1000HE.

Anyway, thoughts? Is facing Best Buy's 14 day return policy a total loss?

Take it back and get another one. Sounds like there may be a problem with the power to the backlight.
