Eee 900 review

apparently a british site:
TrustedReviews Eee PC 900

high lites:

8'9" 1024x600
1GB memory
900mhz Celeron (no atom 🙁 )
12GB storage with XP
20GB with Linux (for the xp price)
1.3mp webcam w/mic
3 usb ports, ethernet, 802.11b/g, multi-touch touchpad, audio out/headphone in, SD card slot, d-sub for video out

review claims ~2 hours of battery with wifi and brightness on full. price is listed as 329 GBP, which is about US$550., no mention of US pricing, maybe itd be different?

id kinda like one, but not at that price without the Atom. kinda makes me wonder what theyll charge for one when it *does* have the newer intel cpu....as well as wondering when its going to come out.

also, and maybe i confused it with another product, i thought bluetooth was going to be a possibility on these as well. am i going nuts?

They're getting better and better....

Now, just do a HDD for the capacity and double the battery life (without adding much weight/cost).

i dont even care about capacity. i hardly make use of the 40gb on my laptop now, keeping most of what i want on my server, and moving some mp3s around from time to time.

id like a better cpu, battery life and 50 bucks knocked off the price.

hell, i wouldnt bicker about the 50 bucks if the other 2 things were addressed.

I'd trade the webcam for higher resolution. Trade the touchpad for a (thinkpad) trackpoint if that will increase keyboard size, or just add the trackpoint. Increased battery life would be great. Hopefully when the Atom version is out, we'll see big improvements.

Doesn't IBM hold a patent on trackpoint-like devices? I guess they could license it from them, but I don't see trackpoint really helping. The width of the chassis is what's really holding the keyboard back.

Anyways, I'm also very interested to see what Atom does for battery life. I don't really know what else they could do to improve battery life, EEE already uses LED backlighting, SSD, etc. CPU/chipset are probably the major thing hurting power efficiency of the EEE. Not so much TDP of the Celeron, but the fact that it doesn't clock itself down under low load.

good point, a webcam is nice....but i have one already, and it isnt used often.

this is so close to what I want. if they could improve on the battery life, and ensure it stays at or below $500...

what I really want to know is with XP loaded, can it handle the netflix streaming video? that would be the nail for me.

Battery life: not so good. I'll wait for the Atom processor version; might add another hour of battery life.

I'll probably wait for the Atom version too. It's nice that they increased the SSD size though. Initially I thought it was going to be 8gb for XP and 12gb for Linux.
