Which is the best degree to have when it comes for finding jobs that pay well? I can probably get the same kind of jobs with either degree, so I'm trying to decide which one to take. Right now I'm going for CS, but I've heard a lot of crap about finding jobs with that major....Any help?

no degree will get you a job......specialists on the other hand are always in demand

There is no answer to your question. The only reasonable answer is "it depends". Different companies want different things. If I had it all to do over again I would have gone into an engineering field instead of computer science. Engineers are viewed by many companies as people that can do any job they have a need for. It would have opened different types of jobs than my CS degree did. Of course I finally landed a job so I am happy.

You should pick a degree that you are most interested in to start with.

I'm also contemplating what to do as well with EE/CPE/CS... I've been doing some programming at my company (already have a degree in GIS), and am thinking about going into CS (another undergrad degree just for fun) to better learn how to program. Do you think CPE or EE would teach me how to program as well? I ask because my buddy from college who was an EE major did alot of programming for his degree... Also, I love computer hardware and how it works as well and would love to learn more about the dynamics of it but learn programming as well... Any suggestions?

Don't pick a degree based on how much you'l be paid, if you do, prepare for a lifetime of disappointment.

I agree, do what interests you, even if that means you're a blue collar worker. At least you'll come home happy!

Ah, well nevermind. What I was saying is that I know that all of those majors could get me pretty much the same types of jobs, so it's not like different fields for me to decide between. I thought that maybe one of the majors was better to have when applying...nevermind. Thanks for the advice anyway

I thought that I wanted to do CS when i first started college, but I ended up doing EE. I love it, aside from all the times that I hate it (which is quite often). But seriously, I am enjoying the material that I learn about, so I can spend days on end doing it without hating life too much. That wasnt so with CS.

I know that at my university, CompE and CS both did a lot of programming. CompE stuck with more C oriented and assembly classes. CS did more object oriented classes. EE takes some of the same programming courses as CompE.

That makes sense since CompE you learn the smaller parts of computers.

Seriously listen to those that say pick a major that you like. I know a LOT of unhappy EE/CmpE/CS graduates working and hating it. Many of them have contemplated quitting when they have enough money to start a business, going back to grad school for something unrelated, or changing fields completely. Go with what makes you happy.

Computer Engineering majors can do various things after they graduate. From what I've found, or at least at my school (Georgia Tech), there's two main paths to CmpE - Hardware/Software Engineering. I guess hardware engineering would be anything dealing with designing processors and the likes or other electronics. Software engineering would be like programming, it's pretty self-explanatory. From what I gather, CmpE is a mix of EE and CS, and I think I'm gonna major in CmpE now. :D
