Edward Snowden Shines a Light on Who Mass Surveillance is Really Meant For

Our government is turning this country into one large prison. Surveillance everywhere, but don’t worry it’s for your protection against the bad guys. Privacy is very quickly becoming a foreign concept.
People would do well to read the laws and technical details around the E911 system as your cell phones have been turned into one of the greatest surveillance tools modern law enforcement could ever have dreamed of.

Then most cities are erecting covert surveillance cameras embedded into the infrastructure that you cannot see unless you watch the installation of them. Most people focus on traffic cameras but these units are not visible unless you know where they've been placed.

Beware anytime the federal government mandates a piece of always powered technology in your homes or offices (hint hint smoke detectors). Your privacy started vanishing back in 1974 and as technology advances the sophistication of their eavesdropping only improves.

It hasn't seemed to bother the British.

That being said; what's that quote about giving up privacy for security and deserving neither?

Regarding Snowden, fuck that traitor. That's all.

Sort of with you.

Basically I’m such a patriot I’m going to head to Russia (one of the least free places) to talk about how much American freedom sucks.
Sorry something doesn’t compute.
Anyone who thinks Russia doesn’t pressure him to post crap and not post crap about Russia is a fool.

Russia wasn’t his first choice, it was the only place he ended up after realizing he was about to be sent back to the US. Snowden isn’t a traitor, because of him we now know the extent our government spies on us. That’s a patriot imo.

Who was the non-police state candidate?
The one that wasn't backed by almost all the police unions, border guards, etc. The one who didn't claim there was a "war on cops" as part of their campaign. The one who didn't argue that police shootings of unarmed citizens were necessary, and who didn't pardon a corrupt sheriff who locked up legal US citizens under the mere suspicion that they might be in the US illegally.

This is one of those areas where I agree... I wouldn't say Snowden is always right, but he leaked info with good intentions and actual care (he vetted info to ensure it wouldn't endanger people). I don't think he's facing significant pressure from Russia given that he's criticized the country. There's no doubt that Russia likes him poking holes in the US image, but unlike WikiLeaks he's trying to make the US better, not take it down.

In that regard, he's the opposite of Julian Assange, who dumps data irresponsibly and and isn't above malicious, partisan agendas (such as trying to get Trump elected in 2016). While I think the particular US case against Assange has problematic implications for free speech, Assange himself doesn't deserve any real sympathy.

I don’t want to turn this into a pissing match
I understand what you are say, and I kind of agree what he did regarding mass surveillance was brave.
I do think that was his highlight, now he’s being manipulated
Don’t think of one second Russia hasn’t put rules on him to comply with like no talking about Russian internet censoring or how Putin became so wealthy.
Otherwise we will deport you to the US.

Calling the country a giant prison is over the top and it’s shit like this that weakens the rest of your arguments. This country has issues but we don’t even hit the levels the UK does, let alone Russia, or China.

1. We need to have an honest discussion of the tools being used and their purposes. Force political candidates to take positions, bring it up in debates etc.

2. Craft strict laws that limit what can be done with the data collected. We can’t wish away the data collection so we need to put policies in place to define how it is used. These policies should apply to both private and public entities.

Lol if you think any of the politicians want less of a police state. Ron Paul was the only one that comes to mind that might. Ever since 9/11 and possibly before there isn’t a candidate in office that wants to curtail the surveillance state and only a fool would think there was.

I agree, no doubt he can’t talk about Russia but that doesn’t make the things he says about the US wrong

And this logic somehow justifies voting for the police state candidate who does little else but spread fear of The Others?

And actually, the senior US Senator from my state, Ron Wyden, is consistently anti-surveillance state. Look up his record if you care to.

There is no way a human being or even a fleet of them can parse through all that data that these massive systems pick up.
That is why it AI's that do it.
And since its AI's no privacy violations in effect.
Until you commit a crime of course, then your entire history gets backtracked and reviewed for misconduct with a court order in hand of course.
So settle down.
Its all good.
(I saw this coming 10-15 years ago, but nooo you are paranoid and, of you dont have anything to hide what are you afraid of???... stupid apes.)
