education in 3D Studio Max

I'm finishing up my associates at University of Phoenix Online, and I want to find another place to spend the governments money on schools. I have some experience with 3dS Max, but I want to learn more, and I figure that taking some classes might help in areas that learning on your own just can't accomplish.

I'm searching for colleges and whatnot that have programs for 3D Studio Max. I want to take a few classes, as I'm an upper level beginner with it right now, and I want to get to the advanced intermediate level. And it has to be an online college, as that is the only type of class that I can take right now. I've searching through google and yahoo, and I can't find anything.

If anyone has any info, please let me know... Thanks.

Look for online tutorials, there are thousands and thousands available, most of which are pretty good.

I don't know about finding one that completeing gives you credit, though.

Also, that giant tome of a "getting started" guide they ship will, in fact, really get you started.

wow can you people read? the guy aint askin for tutorials...hes asking for schools that will teach him (or provide the tutorials in class based format)...thus the searching is for schools not for 3ds max tutorials

i know ITT tech provides classes in it but im pretty sure they arent online...

You neffers. I've downloaded most of the tutorials. But I can take classes for free, and I want to use the money I have allotted to learn more about 3DS Max. And my webpage has some of the graphics that I've done so far, although it hasn't been updated with my current projects.

And click the bloody links for the server that I built, and can turn on... 🙂

What do you want to accomplish with 3ds? There are school that focus on certain skills, modeling, animation, architecture, effects and so on.

I know gnomon3d.com has some great general classes like pratical 3d skills, animation skills and drawing skills. I would also recommend Animation schools index and see what they have.

I would recommend in seeing about learning either Softimage XSI or Maya. There seems to be a boom in jobs, especially for XSI since the release of Half Life 2.

Visit 3DBuzz for a comprehensive listing of video tutorials on CD that you can download and use. They have training for Max, Maya and many more, all free. You do have to participate in the forums there to get access to some of the more advanced ones, but it doesn't take much 🙂

Also, buy the deluxe edition of Unreal Tournament 2004 on DVD. It comes with a DVD from 3D Buzz that's FILLED with excellent Maya and Unreal Editor training.

IMHO, Maya is a MUCH better, easier to use application than Max, and yes, I've used both.

Jason

PS: If you choose an animation school, do NOT choose Westwood College of technology. They are a SCAM. Animation students get ONE modeling class and ONE animation class in the ENTIRE three YEARS they go to school.

Wow, that's good to know. I was looking at them, but they don't offer the programs in Texas, so I was looking to alternatives. And I had no idea about the other places that people have been posting about, which is the precise reason I posted here. Now my only problem is to find some of these tutorials and / or programs that will accept GI Bill or Tuition Assistance. Thanks for the info DragonMasterAlex.

Does 3d animation require an artists eye or imagination? I am not saying i don't have an imagination or anything. I am just not sure how well i would do with seeing the end product in my head before it is built. I have worked with autocad for several years and have never had any problems using it to do what I needed. But I think 3d animation could be quite a bit differant.

I did actualy take a class or 2 several yeasr ago dealing with 3d studio max. We didn't get to in depth, just the basics. It was cool to play with, but again I am just kinda wondering how hard it is to actually do anything useful with it. But I guess the best way to find out is to try, just wanted to see what others think that have done 3d animation.
