Education/Career advice needed

So I'm one class away from having an associate's degree in IT. I've recently decided, however, that I don't think that is the career I want to pursue anymore. But I still need something so that I won't be stuck in my current job forever. I've been considering web development. I am pretty decent with HTML already and I think I would be good at it and enjoy it. How much does it take to get a good job designing/working on web sites? Is a bachelor's degree pretty much mandatory? What is the job market like in this field? I've looked a little bit and there seem to be a lot of job postings in my area, but I don't really know how many people are competing for these jobs.
