I figured we were all smart enough to know we were talking about drinks. I guess not. It is edited above for those who don't understand.

As for other things, few people would call this a pop, however it is a soda.

Chocolate soda, I wouldn't call it a pop.

Fruit soda. It just isn't a pop either.

Well you guys are freaks. I've never heard those drinks (see we just call them drinks here in CA) referred to as soda. I'm sticking by this definition
a sweet drink containing carbonated water and flavoring; "in New England they call sodas tonics"

next thing you know you will be calling it a "tonic"

It started at the ice cream parlors all around the country. In those parlors, anything mixed with carbonated water was called a soda. Ice cream soda, fruit soda, chocolate soda, etc. The ice cream parlors are pretty much dinosaurs. However, the term "soda" is still widely used for all of those drinks.

Thus to be clear, I call flavored carbonated water "pop". Pop, or anything mixed with pop is soda. All dobermans are dogs; not all dogs are dobermans. All pops are sodas; not all sodas are pops.

I don't care how you rationalize it! It's SODA! :|

God himself states "And those that dare call soda, pop, shall burn in enternity within the fires of hell." <== fact!

In Cali, everything is called COKE, they then ask you what kind. I had no idea it's the same way.

I hate the term POP, talk about a redneck backwards statement.

I don't mind Soda, that universal and everyone should know what your talking about.

Those are called floats.

Yankee, probably...

I call it pop, and it's funny that most people equate 'pop' with a redneck colloquialism when most rednecks are southern, and the south generally uses 'coke' while northerners use 'pop'. It has nothing to do with what kind of person you are, but just where you grew up.

Also, 'lunch' is noon food, and 'dinner/supper' is evening food.

The southern rednecks use coke and the mid-western rednecks use pop.

Which just goes to show that it's regional, not personal.

Redneck?...

Pop isn't a redneck vernacular.. it's just west coast, I thought.

Well, according to that study linked at the beginning of the thread..

Pop is a Northwest and upper midwest thing.
