Just noticing that they came out with this new feature, I wanted to do some research to see if it is true that Japanese cars are a better monetary value than domestics.
So, I compared Cavalier to Civic, Avalon to Bonneville, and Camry to Taurus to Grand Am.
Here's what I came up with:
Cavalier LS 115hp 5-speed (TMV $14863) TCO: $30566, 40 cents a mile.
Civic LX 115hp 5-speed (TMV $14548) TCO: $24497, 32 cents a mile.
Well, Civic certainly wins that round.
Bonneville SLE 205hp Auto (TMV $27512) TCO: $43922, 58 cents a mile.
Avalon XLS 210hp Auto (TMV $27655) TCO: $41601, 55 cents a mile.
A little too close here to really see that one has the advantage over the other monetary wise.
Taurus SES 155hp Auto (TMV $19961) TCO: $38529, 51 cents a mile.
Grand Am GT 175hp Auto (TMV $20043) TCO: $34905, 46 cents a mile.
Camry SE 157hp Auto (TMV $19671) TCO: $34086, 45 cents a mile.
The Grand Am looks to be the best since its probably the most fun to drive, though I could be wrong. I don't know the details of these 3 cars which is why I compare only on a monetary basis. The Taurus may also have stuff that makes it worth the extra price in the end, who knows.
I guess this doesn't say too much except between the civic and cavalier where the civic seems to be the much better deal. As for the other cars, there doesn't seem to be too much difference between the domestics and imports. Depends on what you prefer. Well at least I learned something
