Edmunds tests GTR 0-60 times with launch control removed in ECU software update

The Edmumds Long-Term test car is using Bridgestone Potenza RE070R tires, so the Dunlops might even shave another tenth off the times.

The ECU reprogram is an official Nissan update meant to protect the transmission; strangely, it manages to do that without taking away straight-line performance...

Times:

VDC on

0-30 mph-----1.6 sec.

0-45 mph-----2.5 sec.

0-60 mph-----3.6 sec. (3.4 sec. with one foot of rollout like on a dragstrip)

0-75 mph-----5.1 sec.

1/4 Mile-------11.7 sec. @ 118.5 mph

VDC off

0-30 mph-----1.6 sec.

0-45 mph-----2.5 sec.

0-60 mph-----3.6 sec. (3.3 sec. with one foot of rollout like on a dragstrip)

0-75 mph-----5.0 sec.

1/4 Mile-------11.6 sec. @ 118.9 mph

What was all the fuss about launch control with this car? Something about it voiding the warranty and essentially ruining the car for the sake of more performance?

The fuss was basically that before the reprogramming of the ECU, the car needed the VDC off and a high RPM launch in order to achieve the claimed 3.3-3.5s 0-60 time (very, very bad for the transmission). However, after the ECU update to the newer version, it turns out that Edmunds was able to get a 3.6 (3.4 with rollout) 0-60 time even with the VDC turned ON.

LOL, they still voided their warranty reprogramming the ECU!

Of course this car is great, but the problem is, it's hard to modify and is wayyyyyyyyyyy too costly if you fuck something up. A replacement tranny from Nissan is 20,000 dollars.

It's an official Nissan update to better manage power to avoid tranny issues and improve responsiveness. I rather think that it would be the other way, that the best way to keep your warranty intact is to get the recommended update.

Smart move on their part. I heard they were removing LC completely from the car? Glad they can replicate their "wonder-times" even with it off.

Looks like they just saved their own arses!

Yep, I'm actually pretty surprised by this, but perhaps the old management software just wasn't efficient enough or balanced enough in the way it set revs/shifts/fuel delivery/synchronization and so forth.

With the new numbers, the GT-R seems like a serious competitor to the ZR-1 at speeds from say 0-90 or so. From a decent roll, or anything longer than a 1/4 mile, the ZR-1 has the GT-R outgunned in a serious way though. Still impressive for a vehicle priced to compete with the champion of affordable world-class performance, the Z06.

They just increased the boost. Its not that complicated if you can mod the ECU. It a basic step in modding the turbo 3 series (335) and can yield significant power gains with a simple reflash. In BMW's, they honor the warranty with a factory approved reflash, same as Nissan.

I was going to ask of the flash ONLY removed the LC. I bet they did other things that will cut reliability down as well.

0-90 the ZR-1 is still going to be ahead by 1-2 car lengths, it rolls at like a 3.8 0-60 time, and the.

Trap speed is everything 118 vs 131, the Z06 is still a good bit faster with 125mph traps.

nissan looks cooler on the inside though, kinda like a little spaceship

Honestly, is a tenth of second really that big of a deal? Wouldn't the fact that they tested on different days account for the difference? Still mighty impressive though, I can't imagine what it feels like to be in one from a standstill.
