safire's ny times editorial (5.4.04)

nice piece. i think sharon should bank on his popularity, take this to the knesset, and then
try the referendum route with slight modifications to the time table of the unilateral withdrawal.

But no more overconfidence. I know that many on the left and in the center tolerate me because "only Arik can bring along the right." So I have to take more care to convince my
old comrades in Gaza, Judea and Samaria that building a defensible national perimeter is the
road to security now and to peace later.

the beauty of his policy shifts - whether they shift slightly again is inconsequential - is despite
the fuss over his unilateral decision, he is acting against present day circumstances ('security
now') with the option to amend his decisions if the other side ever tidies up their ramshackled
hut ('peace later'). brilliant arik. peace.
