I have a basic XP Pro machine that is a file server for the other 3 systems. It holds about 100gbs of ripped CD's. I use WMP10 to play all my music. I notice under some artists the classified names are slightly different like :

The Smashing Pumpkins
Smashing Pumpkins

So if I edit them in WMP10 on the clients systems and get them all organized and renamed so they show up in one group the way I would like. But then on my other two client systems they do not see the edited info. So I take it when I edit albums in WMP10 it's only changing the info in WMP10 not on the actual file. I did find where I could edit albums info but I don't think that is saving the edited info to the actual file saved on the basic file server.

What would best way to edit my music files so they are organized but are saved on the file itself so whenever I hook up another system or reformat , the files come back the way I want since they are edited not in the Media Player software but at the file level.

Ideas?

I use a program called foobar2000 for my music. It has a really nice mass retagger tool that does what you're asking for. Just google foobar2000 and install it (its free). It's pretty easy to use once it's installed I'm sure you'll get it.

foobar2k's tagger is great, but if you want to make filenames uniform as well as tags, you might want to try some of the many standalone mass taggers out there.

Thanks for the info. I am not looking for a different media playback software even if it has those needed features. I would mainly like a program that could open up the files in my basic file server and edit them so when I open them in Windows Media Player 10 they all show up under the same listing. I want to edit the source of the file not organize them through software on 1 system. I share these files to my gaming system, media center, girlfriends pc,laptop. I don't want to have to organize them on each system, but edit the file itself so all my music can automatically be opened into a organized layout with any new system that runs WMP10 or better.
