Editing a .pdf file in Linux (Ubuntu)

The default 'Document Viewer' and Adobe Reader will open the .pdf files but I need to fill in the form. I've got Adobe Acrobat 7 installed in my WinXP VMWare virtual machine. I opened the blank document, filled in all of the fields (30 - 45 minutes), saved it, and *poof* Acrobat crashed and took all of my work with it.

Tried to install Acrobat 7 using WINE via 'wine msiexec /i AcroPro.msi' and it got part way through the install and bombed with a spew of errors. I've done some looking and so far I can't see any Linux apps that will allow a .pdf to be edited.

Any suggestions (other than Windows & Acrobat)?

Yeah, I know. But this is my 'home' tech forum and it's near the end of the work day. I'll post over there tomorrow. 🙂

Install adobe reader directly from the adobe site. There is a .run file you can install with no problems at all, just read the instructions, for me is OK.

Are you sure Adobe Reader 7 for linux won't fill in forms?

I believe gimp can also edit pdf files, but it probably doesn't support the forms, so you'd just be creating text over their fields.

I've got Adobe Reader 7.0.8 and the plug-ins that allow a form to be filled in installed. The trouble is I can't save it and Email it. I can fill it in and print it but I really need to save the form after I fill it and Email it to my wife. I'm guessing there's no free Linux version from Adobe simply because their Windows version of Adobe Reader isn't free. I was hoping there was another program that would allow this. A coworker pointed me to PDFedit and (after much trouble) I managed to get it installed but either I don't know what I'm doing or it's not what I want.

Hang on, I'm trying to find the package I used. I installed Solaris for dual boot on this machine which completely hosed the MBR and I decided to do a re-install so I don't have it listed right now, but I've definitely done it in Edgy.
