*************************** A CURRENT AFFAIRS FORUM REQUEST ******************************

(Originally a request for a "Politics & War" Forum)

That way you don't step in it via casual surfing, doesn't irritate those who don't care and if you do have something to say - you have a place to go with it where it won't get buried under "Official" stickies. (atm = 3313+ regarding many aspects of politics & war all within 3 Offical War stickies).

It's obviously a very important discussion to many here, and the blocking & locking is certainly taking up the time and patience of the mods in their effort to separate the war and YAGT/are you old enough to shave/look what's been in my 'fridgerator for 8 months threads.

Thank you for providing relief from the War threads for the general ATOT populace and for providing a designated forum for discussion where War and Current events can receive their proper due. This is VERY much appreciated!

good idea.

the official war thread in OT is pretty daunting to read. plus there are a lot of issues under the general war category.

Let's give every member their own forum! That way they could talk about whatever they want.

Simply consider the post count, variety of war/political interests which are being posted, locked, moved, questioned and there begs the question and request for a dedicated forum. A lot of time is taken in moderating OT and locking. moving threads where they should go. Two "Official" stickies does not even come close to handling the quantity and variety of interests in this area.

Because this is not a "war" forum - it's a "computer hardware discussion forums" - despite war being a VERY active topic it in itself does not warrant a new forum.

I'll go ahead and say it: It won't be happening

I am sure you can find a form that better suits your needs elsewhere. As Angrymarshmello said, this is a computer forum. We are lucky to have OT.

Some of you are a funny lot.

This was simply a request in recognition of a lot of traffic and effort that is afforded a particular topic which continues to increase. Break it down to statistical effort and maintenance. A lot of time is obviously spent policing the new posts to lock and move and respond to indignant inquiries. Relegating what is perhaps the fastest growing topic of interest and post counts to the confines of two or three "Official" stickies is somewhat a bottleneck and requires attention that takes away from the purpose of ATOT.

As for "Wow, stupidest new forum request I've seen (and there's been alot)" Come on bsobel, you've been around long enough to see requests that do not even warrant a response. If your comment specifically regards your opinion of the "war" topic - perhaps your post should have been in the "Official" thread and not this one. There's nothing constructive about your comment. This is a respectful request based on statistical volume and effort afforded a particular topic - not a banner waving charge to give an aspect of WAR a placard on the wall.

Regarding the oft popular first and subsequent posts to say "It ain't gonna happen"... Well, perhaps not - but I thought that AT, ATOT in particular prided itself in hearing the voice of its users or in the least - allowing that voice to be spoken. So, though it is a forgone conclusion that nearly any post requesting a new forum would receive the "Let me be the first to say - It ain't gonna happen" treatment, I at least put that into consideration and made it a request based on statistical post count, topical growth and interest that warrants attention based on traffic and the amount of time spent policing those posts - not a self-indulgent need to have my own forum.

We are indeed lucky to have OT - and I am thankful for it.

My comment refers to the dumb idea of creating a Politics and War sub forum on a computer discussion forum. The general 'lets have a 'car', 'home audio', 'general aviation' requests are bad enough. This one is truely stupid. It is not the purpose of AT to provide a forum for every discussion that one or more internet users may wish to have.

Perhaps you should instead ask them to reconsider the merging of all threads into the stickied ones in OT It is OT for heavens sake, it isn't like even a thousand different war threads are going to take away from the intellectual discussions happening in there. Last post I noticed was someone talking about how his lightbulb burned out today.

I'd second that - certainly less "inflammatory" than a Political/War forum. And "Current Events" encompasses so much more while accomplishing the same task.

Exactly. I don't like the argument that we shouldn't add a current events forum because this a computer forum. Get real. Where do most of the post and traffic occur? OFF TOPIC! And, quite frankly, I'm sick of seeing all these current events threads every time I go into off topic.

Hey this wouldn't be the first time another forum was created due to an event of a need. Hot Deals was created due to the Buy.Com Fiasco with the Hitachi monitors, Off Topic was created because of all the "Off Topic" Post in the GH Forum and the "For Sale" Forum was created out of the "Hot Deals" Forum.

I like the current events threads, but sometimes I go to AT in order to escape from reading about them on ALdaily, the economist, newspapers, and cnn. Plus, they seem to have taken over a lot of OT in the past few months.

I kind of like the idea of a Current Events forum, then I'll be able to more quickly access the "guess what's been in my fridge for 8 months" threads over in OT ;)

<ramble> All these form requests got me to thinking. Why is there reluctence to make new forms? Does it cost more more because of bandwidth or something like that? Tougher to moderate? If it's money, how about making it for subscribers only? Might get more people to subscribe.</ramble>

I don't think so. I have a feeling the mods don't want AT to become like some other boards with 50+ sections in their forums. They take more people to moderate, but also break up the community. I think, however, that a current events forum is a great idea.

I'm not so sure that they do split the community.

Take the "Software - Applications, Programming & Games" forum for example. I go there sometimes because of the programming and webdev related threads, although I don't feel any connection to that forum, because only 1 in 20 threads are of interest to me. If there was a pure programming - or just "development" forum (so web design / db stuff would be there too), I would love it. I would proudly proclaim myself an "AT dev forum regular", in the same way that I think of myself as being a regular of the OS forum, part of the "team" so to speak.

Hmm... that gets me to thinking. Here is how I would redo the forum layout:

Hardware News and Events (new things being released, speculation, etc)
General Hardware
Highly Technical
SFF
Operating Systems
FS/FT
Hot Deals
Off Topic
Current Events
Cases & Cooling
CPUs/Mobos/Overclocking
Networking
Software
Development
Games
Forum Issues

And lastly, perhaps a "I emailed the mods and haven't gotten a response yet" forum ;)

Hardware News and Events is dumb. Just post whatever is being released in their respective forums. And you can just check on AT to see whats being released.

And General Hardware is a joke and should be removed. Already sent a request to Zuni. I definitely hope it will be removed at least by FT4...

Hardware News and Events is dumb.
Do you call peoples' ideas dumb to their face in real life? It's not very polite.

Just post whatever is being released in their respective forums.
Ok, that's actually a good idea.

And you can just check on AT to see whats being released.
A website and a discussion board are two very different things, you can't sit around and talk about rumors and specs and whatever by staring at a website.

And General Hardware is a joke and should be removed.
Maybe. On one hand, the different aspects of computer hardware can benefit from being in the same place, on the other hand it's disorganized as hell. I suppose as long as there are proper forums for each type of hardware, then GH isn't needed.
