DUAL SLOT!?!?!?!? OMFG ATI KILLS BABIES!

anyone remember the dual slot nvidia bashing? ;)

well looks like the tables have turned around this time with nvidia having a single slot card.

Time to dig thru the archives and find the names of the people complaining about the 2 slot design to see if they are saying its ok now.

lol...most would be ATI fanboys

I think they were only saying that the 15k record would be beat by 2 G70s in SLI. Not all that surprising, really. It would be great if they were talking about 1 G70 beating the current record, but I doubt that was what they meant.

If history repeats, nVidia announces before ATI and ships after. The X800 was announced about 3 weeks* after the 6800 and shipped about a month before. Considering neither had much to show yet, I would not bet money on shipping dates. Salesmen lie... They seem to think that is their job.

And the high-end cores.... Still can't find that XT PE at the store :D

well obviously 2 G70s would beat the current record. 6800U in SLI have come close to the 13k mark so another 2k is nothing. anyway we are just 3 weeks away from seeing for ourselves.

I think that people are unhappy with dual-slot cards not necessarily because it takes away a 2nd PCI slot. Nowdays, it's pretty difficult to populate all 5 pci slots. Ok sure a sound card, a network card. Maybe a pci videocard, a tv tuner. That's still only 4 even with 1 being taken up by the videocard, that leaves plenty of room for pci upgrades.

But the other overlooked nitpicks are: 1) cant fit into small form factor systems 2) dual-slot cooling generally means the card runs extremely hot and the fan can often be loud to help dissipate all that heat (generally a single slot card is cooler and doesnt require high-rpm fans). Still for some people these 2 points are valid and have nothing to do with being an ATi or Nvidia fanboy to diss dual-slot.

I dont think dual-slot cards should be too much of an issue. It would be like complaining about a Ferrari getting bad fuel economy.

Yeah, and I'll also bet money it won't happen when ATi does it.

Again availability is a different story in Canada. Futureshop is like 90% ati cards. There you cant even get 6800GT/Ultra of any variety.

Except for BFG 6800GT Bestbuy carried (don't know if still does), you cant get high-end nvidia cards there either. For the most part, high-end graphics cards are specialty items period and "regular" stores dont carry either brand. Maybe in USA with CompUSA and Microcenter things differ, but in Canada you have to order online if you want such niche cards.

Yeah, I do. Just ATI marketing crap with the ATI fanboys' spewing it out too. Personally I've never had a problem with dual slot videocards. I got used to the idea when I plunked down the $600.00 for my Quantum3D (remember them?) Obsidian X24 card. If anyone remembers that card it cost at sold for $599.00, the Obsidian cards had dual 3Dfx textel units, had either 16MB (X16) or 24MB (X24) of frame buffer, and were pass-through only. You still needed a videocard for 2D applications! Allowed you to run Doom at 1024x768 as them unheard of frame rates.

I still have mine sitting in my old dual Pentium Pro 200/512k system for nostalgia.

RussianSensation pretty much summed up my thoughts in his post:
