EDITED: Grrr - do I have a right to be annoyed at this?

NOTE: Originally, in an attempt to disguise the story out of concern the person in question might read this thread (he's a good guy overall), I referred to things as widgets and wazzles. This was apparently confusing so I'm fixing it. Hence the annoyed replies :)

**********

I almost never start threads here, so please excuse this rant. If I don't get this off my chest I'm gonna scream!

I use a certain piece of equipment for sports. Its a helmet and cage combo for playing hockey (cage being the wire thing over yer face :p). Not many people use this cage, because its pretty ugly and not stylish/modern - but the few who do use it - love it (including me).

So the company stops making these cages. 'Get 'em while you can before they are all gone.'

I have 2 right now - I really should have 3 or 4 as they tend to last a year each. That would take me far enough to save up for an acceptable (read safe) alternative (an expensive mask).

Well, I know this guy who plays the same sport. He's a good guy and all, so for various reasons (some for my benefit - taking team pressure off me) I got him a spot on my league team.

He mentioned he was looking for cages himself, but a different make/model from me. His cages are also harder to find.

Well I found one of his style of cages at a store and bought it - and immediately offered to let him have it for my cost. Turned out to be a little too small for him, so I kept it. Fine - no prob.

Well now this guy has found and bought TWO of the particular cages I use. He doesn't use them but was sorta toying with the idea. Even if he went ahead, he'd have to find the necessary mounting hardware and helmet to make them work. The hardware is VERY hard to find ( I have only one set of this hardware myself).

He has decided NOT to use the cages - he's going to get a much more expensive, high end mask instead. He also doesn't need these cages for backup use as he already has his other set, and doesn't have the rest of the needed hardware.

But he is still sitting on the cages even after I have offered him TEN times the price he paid! He has NO use for them! He has assured me that if he sells them, I'll get "first dibs" so this isn't about him wanting more $$$ on ebay or something either. But for the forseeable future he is going to keep them for who knows what reason.

ARGH.

Do I have any right to be annoyed at this? If he wanted to Ebay them, fine - I'd be in there bidding. If he wants more $$$, why not tell me how much? WHY is he just sitting on them when he so CLEARLY knows I need them?

My rush is that if I don't stock up now, I will not be able to when they are all gone. So I'm faced with trying to find them other places while he sits on these useless-to-him cages. He gets annoyed if I even ask about them.

Am I wrong here? I know I have no "rights" to what he found, but isn't this pretty cheap and low of him - to buy them knowing I am desperate for them and then mess with me like this?

Am I nuts (about this ;) )????

To further annoy me, 2 other people I've run into online have one of these cages and aren't using them. When I ask how much they want to sell them for, they both immediately chimed up with "Since I know you are desperate, you would have to pay me 3-4 times what they cost me!". They won't ebay these things because they hate Ebay.

Sometimes I hate people - it sucks as soon as they have ANY advantage over you - they immediately start the manipulation.

Rectal plug for when playing rugby?

Anyway yes you do I think :) I'll admit it was harder to follow with talk of widgets and wazzles.

i am in a similar situation, but on another end. i have two nice cd players, one is new and mp3 capable so i use that one. 3 friends have made offers on the older one. but i will not sell. this is not because i want more money or anything... i just want it there for a backup in case i ever need another cd player.

in short... maybe this guy just wants to have them in case he needs them.

I think you have a right to be annoyed, but not mad at him. He bought them, they're his to do with as he pleases.

Now if he said he'd sell them and then didn't sell them to you, yeah, you could be pissed at him.

chill man... the world isn't out to get you. Some people just don't like to sell their stuff... even if they never use it. You never know when your gonna need something. And if you don't need the cash, why sell it?

You have the right to be annoyed but I think not the right to let him feel guilty about it, its his stupid choice after all.

Al right all right - the guy in question is a techie too so he may read this forum. I'll take the chance but was trying to disguise the story as much as possible.

I'm altering the story now.

<< An extra small protection cup ? >>

A heh heh heh - :p

<< Rectal plug for when playing rugby? >>

Skoorb, funny enough, I haven't needed one of those since the days I played rugby with YOU. :p ;)

<< It's Supply-side economics. Nothing to be annoyed about. >>

Sorta - if this was about money or whatever, I'd understand. As it is it just seems so petty for a friend and teammate to pull, y'know?

<< in short... maybe this guy just wants to have them in case he needs them. >>

Yes but in your case gopunk, you want the other CD player for backup. Not only does this guy already have another backup he wants to keep, but he CANNOT use these cages!

<< I think you have a right to be annoyed, but not mad at him. He bought them, they're his to do with as he pleases. >>

I know he has the right, but isn't it petty and cheap of him, considering that in the exact reverse situation I offered him the cage I found at cost?

I guess whats really got me cheesed is his attitude: If I hadn't so enthusiastically shown him my helmet/cage and told him how I've been hunting for them, he would NEVER have bothered buying them when he found them... heck, he wouldn't have even known what they were!

And the very first thing he did when he found them was email me and brag... the first thing I did after finding his rare cage type was offer it to him!

that is a pretty crappy thing to do to a teammate. they aren't going to make that particular cage anymore? they aren't going to just plastic are they? anyway, yeah, the story will make more sense to everyone now i suppose. :D

I'd tell them all to blow it out their collective asses and continue my own search for a cage. Yeah, I would be pissed at the guy you got onto the team; he's being kind of sh!tty but people are wierd.

Just out of principle, nothing is worth begging for. I'd rather do without than let some schmuck get his jollies out of gigging me on price. I'd keep searching and hopefully something will turn up at a reasonable price; if not, then I say, oh well, such is life.

Never heard of a cage one before. Why not get one of those stylish ones that you can decorate? I would think those would be alot better than a metal cage...

Funny thing. I've got two widgets to sell and I know this guy on my team that will pay me 10 times what I paid for them to sell them, but I think I'm going to sit on them until he offers me 20x value. He sounds pretty desperate.

I can see why you're upset. You don't think it's logical for your buddy to hold onto the cages when he won't use them and you will, and he wouldn't even own them except that you said you were trying to find some.

I think it was a mistake to offer even one penny more than what he paid. It might have made him more resistant to selling them. In fact, if he changes his mind, you should refuse to pay more than it cost him. Even if that means you'll have to look harder. Maybe that's cutting off your nose to spite your face, but I would have a hard time "rewarding" a friend for extortion. If I had no choice but to pay 10x the value, I would buy them anywhere else but from him.

Personally I would also be upset with a friend who did that. He's not wrong, though - he can do as he pleases with them. But a friend should have offered them to you for his cost, IMHO. Just as you did.

No, everything now is masks - those painted ones NHL goalies wear.

jjones: Thats EXACTLY what I think I want to do - tell them all to shove the cages up various parts of thier anatomy and keep pluggin - even pay more if needed - to find them myself.

Nightmare:

<< Never heard of a cage one before. Why not get one of those stylish ones that you can decorate? I would think those would be alot better than a metal cage... >>

Well, here is a cage/helmet combo:
Irbe

And here is a mask (the kind you paint and most goalies wear):

clicky

Differences include visibility and protection, but it comes down to this:

A cheap mask ($300 - $600) is not as safe as a helmet/cage, but an expensive mask ($700 -$1200) is the safest. Until I can afford an expensive, high end mask, I'll stick to the helmet/cage combo.

The saddest thing is I WOULD pay 20x what he paid - he paid ONE DOLLAR each for them out of a bargain bin. I'd give him $20 each for them.

That guy is no "friend". Treat him as some asshole you dont like, or a complete stranger. That being said, assholes and complete strangers can charge whatever they want since it is their stuff.

Well, he found them in a bargain bin for $1 each. They sell new (if you can find them!) for $20 each so I've offered as high as that...

Did that commercial in canada with the hockey goalie who takes a puck in the face have anything to do with this?

loads of goalies I know play with the mask/cage combo. I didnt read the entire thread, but I guess you're a fan of the Irbe stuff. (I use a mask myself, not a mask/cage combo. Its an Itech, and served me well. I played AA midget level.)

Talk to the guys over on the Goalie Store BB, they'll help you out. They look all over the place for this stuff.

Best of luck to you.
