I have this HP 521n here. It posts fine, then does the XP home starting up bar thing.... then it restarts. i saw a blue screen error one time, but i couldn't read it. safe mode wont work either, same thing

a) how can i find out what it said?
b) and ideas what i could be? i tried a new vid card... no luck

any help would be appreciated.

**EDIT**

ok... so i ran a repair install... and it worked.. but everything is like super dooper slow.

note: the repair install failed until i took the hdd and scan disked it on another computer.

could the hdd be bad? would that make stuff go slow?
thanks
david

If you can't boot the machine up(and can't get to system restore), you might try booting to the WinXP CD and go to the Repair option.

I don't use XP much, but I know it will reboot on a BSOD unless you change the setting in the Control Panel to tell it not to reboot on errors. Can you boot into Safe Mode and change the setting?? Then you'd be able to read the error and get help.

Did you add a new cd-rom or something? maybe the PSU might not have enough power since they can come with skimpy psu's. I had a problem like that on my compaq i got BSOD when i added a cd-rw. I thought the cd-rw was bad so i took it out and my pc ran fine. Then i stuck it in a computer i recently built and the cd-rw worked fine- turnes out the PSU couldn't handle the extra drive.

Try running memtest86 and see if the ram is causing the problem. if you can't get into safe-mode it's probably a hardware problem in my opinion, could be wrong though. BSOD sounds like memory or not enough power to me. a little more info of what you have might help

i'm running memtest86 right now. i'll let you know on the results. also, there have been no devices added. is there a better way to tell about power usage besides just unplugging something and seeing if it works?

as soon as the test finishes i will try that and see if we get anywhere, else i will post again

Couple ideas

1. Pull out all hardware except video and possibly LAN and minimum RAM>>see if it will boot>if not boot then switch Ram pieces

2. Pull the drive out and install it in another machine as a slave drive -
Delete the PageFile>>reinstall and try to boot
