EDIT I just got off of the phone with National City to check on all pending activity for my checking account. The first thing Jason (the NCB rep) told me: "You are overdrawn a bit, this charge of ~$100 put you in the negatives" I replied, "I know, I cancelled the order from staples.com, the lady I spoke with yesterday said my account should reflect a positive balance by Wednesday"

To that he replied, "Well, as a courtesy, I'm going to go ahead and remove that overdraft charge from your account, call back tommorrow evening or Thursday morning if you want to check up on the updated account information."

Thats pretty awesome... I was just calling to do a routine activity check on my account (I was at the bank this morning and I forgot to ask for a receipt) and Jason refunded the overdraft charge. What luck!
 
When they preauthorize the purchase using a debit/credit card, it will show up as pending. They don't "unpend" the transaction, they'll just void it.

Nothing uncommon about it...

I used to blame companies for pending charges leading to over drafts.. To be perfectly honest though, it's your fault.. Take this as a learning experience and don't be angry about it.. Just be more careful in the future...
 
Man, don't people understand how these things work? It's ALWAYS how they do it. They don't actually "charge" your card, but they make damn sure you've got enough money to cover it. You've got to waut a couple three days for it to come back, but it will be back. Just call your bank and explain the situation to them. Fleet always refunds the overdraft for me, the couple times I've done it.
 
It doesnt make sense your right about that. Its obviously set up so banks can find another way to profit from you giving htem your money.
 
I think you need to think before you click the buy button. Why purchase the item if you are just going to call them back shortly and say never mind?
 
Yea I have a problem with buying stuff on impulse - but I guess sometimes we just learn the hard way, oh well -- I just opened my checking account a few months ago so I'm not very knowledgeable about the whole hee-haw.
 
Yeah, all that is is a credit card authorization. Everytime you use your check card it does that, money doesn't actually get drawn from your account until 2-3 days later.
 
never ever ever ever use your check card / debit card to buy goods online, its not insured like a CC and if somone comprimises the number and you loose money or even go into the negitives, your responsable for it.
 
What the obviously did was get an approval for the amount they were going to charge, so I suspect that the CSR was a bit clueless. An approval reduces the electronic available balance, but does not affect your actual balance until the entire transaction is cleared.

What I'd like to know is, how the hell can they get by with charging you for an overdraft for a pending charge, a charge that has only been approved, not cleared?
 
Some nice guy from NCB refunded the overdraft charge without me inquiring about it... read the first post.
