edit: believe it or not, I got a competent guy
It took a minute for me to figure out that he wanted me to swap the power supply cords from the monitor and the computer - I told him I had already disconnected everything from the computer and did try a new power supply cord.

Anyway.. I tried the short across green and black trick (with a small load on the power supply) - no fan on the power supply...

I'd swap in my own power supply, BUT, I've heard some of the Dell power supplies are proprietary...
HOW do I know if the Dell power supply is proprietary??

---------------------------------------------------------------------
Kids computer is dead..
Either bad power supply (most likely) or bad switch.

Been delaying this call for a couple of weeks... I hate Dell's support.

Initial call: 12:10pm.

Still waiting, hasn't been long so far..
decent music... their hold music keeps getting interupted by detailed instructions on how to reboot your computer... Viruses and spyware are 3rd party software and aren't supported by Dell...

system restore info now...

I'm going to keep updating this as I go...
I'm sure it's not amusing.... nor is it going to be amusing waiting on hold for the next hour or so..

20 minutes so far.... at least I'm in the middle of putting in another 160 GB hard drive into my own computer, that'll give me something to do while I clean up files, make backups onto the new hard drive, etc.

:music:
bring me a higher love
bring me a higher love
bring me a higher love
bring me a higher love
bring me a higher love
Wher'es that higher love I keep thinking of?
bring me a higher love
bring me a higher love
bring me a higher love
:music:

I almost like that song by Steve Winwood, but it's wayyyyy to repetitive the last 5 minutes.

JFC! What is this? A Steve Winwood CD for the hold music???

God I wish I had conference calling so I didn't have to hold the phone up to my ear....

Suggestion to everyone... when you know you're going to be on hold for a long time, get a conference phone.

whoa.... that's weird... I just looked to see what tools I was going to need to take off the cover...
the fan was "blinking on and off" never getting up to speed... Hmmmmm......

lmao.... one of the hold messages...
"if your computer is slow, or won't connect to the internet... go to www.dell.com and click on..."

Are there any Steve Winwood fans in the world??? Why oh why do I have to listen to song after song by him?
"Back in the High Life Again" now..

Start singing with him, may'be someone will answer the phone while you are singing.

Hey! There's something I didn't know! The modem connection is on the bottom of the computer.
(I thought it was located in the back)

Hey... if they're providing help to idiots who don't know where the modem connection is, perhaps they should give better directions??

This thread cracks me up.

You forgot to put "powercycle your computer" as an option (I know it's dead, but the mental picture of you trying to hold back on the phone while convincing them you can't do it is priceless).

Hey, how'd that house thing turn out?

"Back in the High Life Again" now..

We'll be back in the high life again
All the doors I closed one time will open up again
We'll be back in the high life again
All the eyes that watched us once will smile and take us in
And we'll drink and dance with one hand free
And have the world so easily
And oh we'll be a sight to see
Back in the high life again

EDIT:

What's the next song? Or did they finally answer?

Okay... no fan on the power supply, but a little green LED comes on on the motherboard (now that it's opened)..
this means the motherboard is bad????

No no, I've had teh light go on on a good mobo before. Actually that's probably what it's for.

Cant you just test the kid's PS out on your comp? Process of elimination.

He was saying that since the light was on, the power supply is good..
But, the power supply fan isn't coming on... and how do I know if the power supply in general is good?

edit: what I mean is.. does that little green light indicate that all the rails in the power supply are good?

No. I've got a bad PSU at home and the mobo's little green light came on fine. Tried the PSU out in 2 computers, it didn't go on either time.

Nope.

You're making me feel better 🙂

I'm going to swap my power supply into the kids computer... crossing my fingers....
