Went driving down the rough state roads this weekend in my Echo.

1. My speedometer stopped working. On the rough roads, most of the time it would register 0, but big hits or shakes would make the needle jump up and down, even past the actual speed (ie. if I'm going 30mph and hit a series of bumps, the needle would jump quickly from 0-50-10-40-0-40-0.

Now that I'm driving on smooth roads it just registers zero. The odometer doesn't move either. My check engine light also turned on.

2. Sometimes when I press the emergency light button while the car's stationary the car will just shut off. I have to restart the engine and everything. When I do this while the car's moving, I feel a sudden drop in power, and then it goes back to normal.

3. Sometimes when I put on my blinkers, BOTH indicator arrows inside my dash will start blinking like I had turned on my emergency lights instead. However, the actual turn lights in the back are working fine.

Any ideas?

Gauges in your Echo are electronic. Either wiring went bad, the speed sensor died, or the ECU is no longer sending the right signal to the gauge cluster. Sounds most like a connection issue though.

Take it in to Toyota. Should still be under warranty right?

Dude, what were you doing off-roading in an Echo?

I'm going to guess that he was scouting for some of his phenomenal photographs.

Oh no, not under warranty. Year 2000, 100K+ miles, and lots of good times. I was camping :)

O-o-o-oh what a feeling........ ;)

Dude, I had the driver's door window shatter (in a POS old 89 Chevy Celebrity) during the middle of a TYPHOON (when I lived in Guam, December 1997, Super Typhoon Paka, sustained winds over 150mph), with TONS of rain soaking the dashboard and instrument cluster......and within 24 hours, the speedo started working again! Imagine my surprise when the damn thing started up and drove!! ;)
