haha

try reading the instructions.

most require u to turn everything off(computers, router and the cable mode)

than turn on the modem, reset the router than power up all the computer...

that should work

Thats what works for us. For some reason after one of us reboots we cant get back on the network. Resetting the switch lets us get back on.

how about the cable MAC address. Most routers allow you adopt the MAC address, but some don't and you have to phone it in

You have not told us much here....

1) What is the service? Cable? DSL?

2) If DSL is it PPOE? If cable does the company authenticate via MAC address?

3) Are those settings in the router? ;)
3a) If PPOE you need to put your login info in.

4) Are the clients static or DCHP?

5) If static did you manually assign the DNS? (client side)

6) Do you need to manually assign DNS in the router?

7) Can they ping the LAN port on the RT314?

The RT314 has a browser based configuration. Log onto http://192.168.0.1 (I think that's it), username: admin, password: 1234. Go to setup and there's a setting for you to spoof your nic card's mac address. That's if you're on a cable modem. DSL I'm not sure.

Web based config was added in a firmware release. fatbaby may not have this...

If it was made within at least the past 15 months, it has the basic web based config. I got mine in November 2000 and set it up via my browser.

If your LAN works, then you have not setup WAN side correctly. Who is your cable provider? You might want to check out netgear.com FAQ on rt 311-314, they have some help. When you write that you can't get router and cable modem at the same time, you sure you've got the things plugged in correctly?

I have rt314 for about 2 years, and it's a good router; never had problems except when attbi took over from @home; and that only because attbi kept screwing up their DNS ...

Answers please? The RT314 is a great router, besides its DNS issues with some ISPs.

I've seen the same problem too many times to count. The computers on the network can see each other, but none of them can get outside. some of the ones I've seen like this were just config errors, but a ton of them were caused by people trying to use a straight-thru cable to connect the modem to the router. You almost always have to use a Cross-over cable. Straight-thru cables are for connecting the PCs to the router.

Cross-over - meaning that the orange and green pairs are reversed on one end of the cable.

Also make sure you gateway on your machines is your routers ip address.
Normally 192.168.1.1

Also I recomment static ips on the PC's but thats just me.
