I might lease a 2010 Prius.

Yes, it's me the person who said in the "your next car" thread I'd buy a G35, the one who mocks with glee people who buy new cars, especially those who lease, the person who in a Prius leasing thread just four days ago said

Silly. You buy a prius to save money. If you want to save money you don't lease. I see no point in this at all.

And yet here I am. Whether it's because of the economy or Toyotas that don't need brakes, Toyota is just giving some absurd lease deals now. They are silly, silly cheap. The math that is normally so damning has been suspended, the world torn asunder. On the radio I heard about Prius leases at $179, so I looked into it assuming it was a scam, but it really isn't. My local dealerships (I just called them) all have these Priuses for $189/month, $0/down. There are taxes, aquisition, doc fees, etc. for maybe $1700 or so. Or you can finance all that junk for a single monthly payment of $259.

This has nothing to do with the environment. I hate the environment, never saw a smokestack that didn't bring a tear to my eye or deforested acre that didn't make me smile. This is all about the Benjamins.

I am not in the market for a new car and if I was it would not be a green car with less power than a bicycle but the fact is this is exceedingly hard not to bite down on. The gas savings and maintenance when run against cost of ownership and depreciation and gas on my Maxima over the next three years are close (not at, but close) to a wash.

Anyway, I'm off to read that other prius thread now.

Just kidding...but we will mock you no doubt. :D

That really is a ridiculously good deal...but do you really want to sign up for 2-3 years of driving agony? Remember how much you love the pull of your VQQQQQQ? You will be financially bound to not getting that feeling for 2-3 years. Are you just giving up in life? ;)

Don't put any money down, otherwise if you get in an accident you will lose out on the money you put down.

Always put 0 down on a lease and get replacement cost on your insurance then if you do get in an accident insurance company will write a check, car is taken car and you don't have to worry about anything.

Leasing is a choice just like anything else. The idea behind the ridiculous lease rates is Toyota or the company wants the cars back in a certain number of months on the used market as it thinks it can make a profit there. That is why certain leases are incentivized (is this a word?) by manufacturers.

I do think you need one thing though. POWER!

Believe me, I am wondering the same thing. I am. Mrsskoorb is on board with this, I feel I can get leverage. When we bought our minivan she promised I could put subs in it, but I didn't end up wanting to. Perhaps if I do this I can get a promise to get something good at the end, but in point of fact I am the prime car motivator anyway so at the end I'll probably have been fully sullied and neutered, spiritually.

Good point I had forgotten about the replacement bit.

I'm in a similar position skoorb. I find myself having just bought a car with 75k miles that gets 26mpg... and a yearly mileage of ~35k. Do the math and thats $280/mo just in gas at $2.50. That's $40 more than my car payment.

Now if this were temporary, it'd be fine. I drive the car for a year and dump it with 110k before I lose my hat. But I'm spending almost $300 a month in gas alone. That's ridiculous. I could lease a hell of a lot of car for $300 a month.

I would really love to lease a new golf TDI. That'd give me a new car, in full warranty, with free service, and drop my monthly gas bill to ~170. I could probably break even on my loan if I needed to, because I had a large downpayment, but that seems like money wasted. Problem is I don't know if I'd even get approved for a lease (long story short, parents neglected paying for my school without my knowledge causing me to get a collection, dropping me from ~725 to ~625)

Plus if I leased something I'd have to go into it knowing I'd buy it out. Turning in a car with 100k when they expect 50k would get me hosed in fees

Argh. Rock---me---hard place

If it makes financial sense, or you just want a new Prius, go for it. Honestly, know how to turn the car off and find neutral, and you'll have peace of mind.

Car-wise, I drove a 2008 Prius on Monday for half a day, and a 2008 or 2009 Camry Hybrid all day yesterday. if you do a lot of highway driving, you really should consider the Camry (if lease deals are also available) over the Prius. It has so much more power, it isn't funny. However, the Prius is small, nimble and its sight lines 360 degrees around are amazing. Hatchback rear makes backing up/parking simple and fun. Camry's a boat, let's leave it at that, but mileage is amazing.

Ok...how about this. Go to a dealership with your Maxima and test drive the Prius. Now leave dealership with your Maxima. Now go to Nissan dealership and drive a new 370Z. If you still want the Prius...maybe you really should get one.

didn't you used to have a civic that your parents gave you? you were all upset about it because it wasn't a mustang. i suggest you don't get the prius because it would be like that civic experience all over again.

I think a Prius could be fun. Whenever the engine turns off and it goes to the electric motors I'd be saying "engage the silent drive" in my best Sean Connery voice. All I'd need is the Hunt for Red October soundtrack on CD :)

I'd prefer "engage stealth mode" and "engage hyperdrive" for when it turns back on. or when my accelerator got stuck

I've driven a camry hybrid around the city a bit and it wsa not bad. Pitiful and I do mean a tragic trunk, but it was maybe a 2006 or something.

Power was good.

I just test-drove a prius at lunch. It was as expected. Light on power, econobox feel. Nothing like my max except for it felt a bit tighter because it is newer.

Still, I went over numbers and they are real, so I'll decide in the next day or so. Going to actually see if I can get them to bump the payment significantly and we could use it as our primary car. We only do about 10k/year on the max but 20k/year on our minivan. The backseats in the prius are not big enough for a grown adult. I am 5,11" and my head hits. That's ridiculous, but our kids are not grown adults so is moot.

You remember that? I had forgotten! It was a parody, though :)

This thing feels slower than my 2004 MPV and that's because it is.

How the mighty (in my only mind only) fall.

Hah, my parents screwed me like that too .. I moved out when I was 18, but when I was 17 I had some dental work done, and they didn't pay, and put it in my name, and let it go to collections, but kept mailing my parents old house ... long story short, I had to pay 1.5x the original amount, to get it desisted from collections...not a big deal now, but $1600 was a big chunk of change for me back then. Credit score is in the mid 700's now.

IMO, get that TDI golf, they are rather slick cars. These guys are pretty helpful : http://forums.tdiclub.com/index.php if not VWVORTEX.

Heh, if you think the Prius has an econobox feel, wait till you get a load of the current Corolla and Yaris! The Prius is a Lexus in comparison.

I have driven a fairly recent Corolla and from the rooftops heralded what a piece of sh*t it is. I think in all ways one can define garbage it meets them. It had a much worse drive than my minivan. Much worse. Toyota is leasing them at about $140/month but given their decent gas mileage is still inferior to a Prius it's basically a wash and the Prius is much nicer.

Parentsjustdontunderstand.

You're lucky you were only on the hook for $1600, I have $5200 that they TOLD me was paid off that I gotta pay. Luckily they're happy getting $200/mo from me and aren't adding interest/anything to the balance. Parents still aren't helping pay even 1yr later.

The collection dinged my credit so bad I had to get my bro to cosign for me (neither parent would do that either!) so I could get a loan for less than 13% :(

I would totally get a TDI if I could, but a loan to buy isn't possible til my collection gets removed, a lease would get me stuck with tons of mileage fees or having tobuy it out which is rarely good, and with my current car I'm wasting tons of cash on gas and in the nearish future maintenance that I could otherwise be spending on getting my collection removed!

hence, rock---me---hard place :(

Get something at the end? If you actually get the thing you'll get something in your end by driving a Prius. Make sure it doesn't come from the dealer with a rainbow sticker pre-installed as every Prius around here has one or an = sticker.

Is the Maxima paid off? If so this is even a more idiotic move than I thought. Also have you checked insurance rates on the Toyota?
