edit - comcast started enforcing 1 IP per account - this happened to come at the same time though as i was out of town for 2 weeks and got the cable modem replaced

i have the problem that on one of my computers i get no internet connection and i can not renew the IP because i get an unable to connect to DHCP server.

overview of HW

comcast cable modem - cross over cable to 10/100 hub. patch cable to PC, patch cable to pc in another room. the problem is on the computer in the other room.

comcast came out here to replace modem, when they did that they unplugged hub and connected one pc driectly to cable modem.

i am now running one pc off of the hub, and the other one is still unable to renew its IP info.

the problem PC was unable to renew its IP info even when connected directly to cable modem via patch cable.

i have individually verrified each cable so that is not the problem.

both PCs run Win XP. both PC's could run at the same time prior to comcast replacing the modem

any idea what is wrong with the 2nd pc?

thanks

If that's a hub and not a router, you'll probably want to get a router. Why? Because Comcast most likely will only allow you to have 1 public IP address, so you'll need a router to grab the public IP address and share it between your 2 computers who will get private IP addresses.

Why won't the 2nd pc work when plugged directly in? Probably because the cable modem already associated the MAC address of the 1st pc, power cycle the modem with the 2nd pc should make it work.

Read www.ezlan.net Internet links for more info.

thanks for the input

do you think comcast would have changed things when they came out here to replace the modem - because i could use multiple computers off of the hub in the past

Dude, if you are running your pc connected directly to the cable modem, you are nuts! I have a Smoothwall firewall setup on mine, and it has Snort built in. You wouldn't believe the number of virus and hack attempts every day that come in through my Comcast connection!

Anyway, glad you figured out the problem, but you should look at getting some sort of router or even a full firewall. Otherwise you're just asking for trouble.

Yeah I talked to the poor computer and it claims that it heard from other computer that it can have a better live if it should get a cable/DSL Router for $10-$20.

It resents that you do not think it is important enough to spend few $$ on it.😉😉😉
