Edit: Drive stuck in PIO mode.

I have one 40GB Seagate drive and one 40GB WD drive. I had my WD drive in another computer and when I stuck it in the box that has the Seagate drive, the Seagate suddenly went slow. The Seagate drive has Windows installed on it and everythhing moves slow. Opening IE or even My computer will raise the CPU usage to 80%-90%. Coyping a file on the Seagate drive will make my CPU usage skyrocket while doing anything on the WD drive it will stay low and normal. Coying a file on the Seagate also take about 3 times longer then the WD drive. This leads me to believe that it is the HD's fault, not windows.

What could be wrong, did a setting get chenged on the Seagate drive? How do I check if it is in DMA mode?

you move the jumpers yet ..?

Ok I found my problem, The seagate drive is running in PIO mode and not DMA. I have "DMA if available" Selected but it stays in PIO mode. How can I fix this?

under Device Manager..IDE controllers

but your jumpers should not be CS if your system is modern..the WD doesn't like CS usually..

Actually my WD shipped with the jumper in CS and said not to change it unless you encounter problems.

OK, It says that if all the devices are set as cable select then all should work well. Also it is my Seagate drive that is in PIO mode not my WD, the WD drive is working fine.

Try setting one of the drives to Master and the other to Slave, see what that does. Also, manually set your ATA/IDE controllers to DMA mode. If the cable is some funky rounded one, use a normal flat 80-wire ATA cable while you're at it.

If the controllers refuse to stay in DMA mode, then rant a bit, have a snack break, go into Device Manager and do an Uninstall on them, then reboot.

hiya Mech 🙂
<-- wonders when Hanzou plans to reboot to do the refresh..😉

I set the jumpers to the proper master and slave positions, rebooted and no dice. I uninstalled the drives and let XP detect them, still the Seagate continue to run in PIO mode. What else can I do?

give up on the drive. i had that problem once, i couldn't get it to do non pio lol🙂 it was sad. hasn't happened since go figure. no idea why.

Don't uninstall the drives, uninstall the Primary and Secondary ATA/IDE controllers that the drives are connected to.

(edit: hiya ScrapSilicon 😀)

Thanks mech, After uninstalling teh IDE controllers, everything worked itself out. Also, I have been using tweezers and pliers to remove jumpers and its still a pain. I will try this paperclip technique.

Excellent solution. I had exactly the same problem.
I just uninstalled the IDE controller, reboot, reboot again and it goes now very very faster !
Great !
And thanx for your participation.
