for my car, I gotta remove the entire door panel to reach the speakers...I'm half-tempted to just cut the whole and glue the mesh cover over the speaker back

The fronts are like that. I have a thread bookmarked from some user group about how to do it but apparently it is a bit of a pain. I'll admit I didn't know what I was doing opening the back up and ended up destroying the old factory speaker covers in the process. I didn't need them anyway, but it was a real hack job.
