I've heard a lot of people complain about their Maxtor/IBM/WD drives failing and that the company sucks. Does anybody have anything against Seagate? I'm in the market for two 20 GB hdd's. Is there a 20gb 7200 ATA/100 from a specific company that I should avoid? Thanks.

There are always gonna be people who say a brand sucks. IBM's been seeing high RMA rates with some of their drives, but Seagate, IBM, Maxtor, and WD all make quality products. Just because someone had trouble with one specific drive does not mean the entire brand is bad.

What you hear are opinions. Seagate makes the best SCSI HDD on the market, and their IDE drives are pretty nice as well. I am a little partial to the IBM 60GXP series though.

I really like Seagate myself. I've got a 17.2gb Seagate Medalist (IDE) that's never given me so much as a hiccup. I've had an IBM and a Western Digital fail in the past though.

i run both seagate and ibm....and i ahve never had issue with either manufacturer...seagate is a very good drive and has that added "skid plate" that covers the electonics on the underside of the drive.....but i dont think you can wrong with either of them.

Which do you think would be best for RAID? I read in another post that Maxtors are hard to RAID. I want to buy the hdd's at www.compuplus.com because they have exactly what I want: SMC Barricade 4port, IWill RAID controller, and 20 gb hdd's. The prices are great too for the stuff that I'm getting. They only have Maxtor and WD for the 20 gb 7200 ata100 drives though. They have a seagate ata66 drive too. Would there be a big difference between ata66 raid and ata100 raid? Thanks.

I dont think maxtors work as nicely together in raid, not postive of diamondpax+ though.

Ata66 raid is very close to ata 100 raid. If it costs you more than $5, go for the cheaper.

Hmmm... I might go with the two Seagate's then. Have you seen any comparisons between ATA66 RAID and ATA100 RAID?
