Edit: Are there *any* restaurants in KC with live music and good food for < 21 years old?

Going with some friends on August 12 & 13, Monday and Tuesday. Worlds of Fun is gonna take up most of the first day, and after that it's up for grabs.

KC is supposed to be really big on jazz, isn't it? Anyone know some good clubs we can go to for (reasonably priced) food and good live music? Any live music would do I suppose, as long as it's not country.

What are some good restaurants to check out? Nothing too expensive please. My dad went to KC Masterpiece a few days ago and said it was overpriced and not all that good.

Edit: Our group is aged 19-22, so recommend accordingly. :)

OK, for food?
Ponaks - Mexican, but very VERY good, and slightly more expensive then McDonalds. Down on...Oh...well its the Rainbow trafficway exit from 35...*L* Dunno, just KNOW ya know?
Thai place - Guess what? Thia food! :) EXCELLENT Thai, kinda pricey though. On 87th street, off I-35 again.
Gates BBQ - Mmmm...BBQ. Theres a few different places, one on 435 and State line and one down by Ponkaks if i remember. Ponaks is also by KU Medical Center, its a groovy part of town. Theres a good sushi bar there, Oh! Jimmy Jiggers Oyster Bar! :) Another good place to eat / drink and relax. Westport - Bar district thing. This place is mad on the weekends. A meatmarket of 4ss, good times. The Plaza is worth a few hours, I wouldnbt buy anything, its too expensive, but its a cool ittle area to hang out, couple blocks square. Just take Wornall to 50 or 40th street, your'll notice it cause it'll look like ya dropped into the rich part of town, which is funny cause you can be in ghetto land in about 5 minutes fomr there. Well, maybe 10. Oak Park Mall is a good mall, 95th and Antioch. Oh! Amercian Bandstand, 435 and Metcalf. Personally, I REALLY like KC Masterpiece, but your not the first to say someone they know didnt like it. To each their own I suppose. Cant think of anything else right off, sorry.....

For barbecue in KC, you have 2 choices.

a hole in the wall place.... LC's off 95th and I-35

or, my favorite

Jack Stack Barbecue off Metcalf and 95th, or the original in Martin City which is like 25 mins south of KC. I prefer the one at metcalf though.

With all due respect to you KC lovers, my best advice when traveling to KC is to bring a good book.

Go to the Plaza for some upscale shopping.

Westport has a great bar/club scene.

Don't get caught in the wrong area of town after dark.

Enjoy your visit.

STFU :| You don't know a damn thing.

Like slag said, you have to go to Jack Stack for barbecue - they are the best in town IMO. There's one at 23rd and Wyandotte also, on the other side of the tracks from Union Station. I'll agree with your Dad, KC Masterpiece is overrated - their BBQ is good, but not great like at Gates or Jack Stack.

The Westport area is fun if you're into the club scene, but it really is a meat market late at night. There's a bunch of good casinos if you like gambling - on the east side of town is where you'll find most of them.

The best jazz clubs are going to be downtown or in Westport. There's a chain of restaurants called "Jazz, Louisiana Kitchen" or something like that which are pretty good. I know there's one off of Barry road up north, near I-29. I'm not sure of the names of any other ones, though.

Wherever you end up, you'll have a lot of fun. KC is a great place to visit, and I love living there.:)

I've actually only been there once and it was for a compeition (SkillsUSA VICA) and overall I thought it was pretty cool. Few things...

I am from NV, which is really dry and really hot....at KC it was really damp and really hot. Quite a change from me, seemed like as soon as I got outta the shower I needed another one. Seemed I was always wet. Anyways Worlds of Fun was pretty awesome. They have this one ride where they flip ya around a bunch and spary water, its actually a rather simple ride where I see at most fairs minus the water effect but it was by far the funnest. We tried to go on a rollarcoaster there that was supposedly one of the fastest but it closed down that night for some reason. The raft ride sucks.

I would agree with whoever said the plaza is pretty cool to check out but wwwwaaaaaaaaaaay to expensive to get anything. Add on that KC ha a 8 something sales tax I believe, its only 7.25 here. But it does have a ton of neat little shops, some I've never seen before.

Have fun

Actually, there's a club in Westport (about 43rd street south between Main and Southwest Trafficway) called Stanford and Sons Comedy Club. If you were coming here between Aug 14-18, I'd suggest it since Emo Phillips is supposed to be here.

I've only been to the original in Martin City, but I can atest to the fact that it's some of the best food I've ever eaten. Why do you prefer the one at Metcalf? I might have to check it out next time I'm in town.

There's one downtown, too, at 23rd and Wyandotte, on the north side of the tracks at Union Station. Some of the best food in the world, there. :) I've never been ti the other ones... :(

OH MAN!!!!

Reading this thread is makinging me so homesick!!! I lived there for 24 years and consider it my real home. I gotta get the F*ck outta Floriduh!!

Lived about a mile from Worlds of Scum, ehr sorry, Fun. Best BBQ close to there was Smokestack on North Oak. Still existed 3 years ago when I last visited. I always thought KC Barbeque was bland and overpriced so you might like this one. Serve family style, cheap and lots and wonderful.

TO:
Take a book,
Sorry you missed one of the best experiences of your life!

Yeah, steakhouses also!!! Golden Ox was not one of my faves but KC steaks are out of this world.

Great Mexican also. If you like food, You could eat at a different restaurant in KC every night for years!!!!

Golden Ox is close to Kemper Arena but is not close to "the stadium" that would be the Chiefs/Royals sports complex in Independence (Harry S. Truman sports complex).
The best steak house in town is the Plaza III.

BBQ - really cant go wrong with Gates, Zarda, or Arthur Bryants (there is an Arthur Bryants at Ameristar casino if you dont want to visit the original).
Music (Metal): The Hurricane in Westport
Music (Jazz and Blues): Grand Emporium
Boobie Bar (Juice): Bazookas
Boobie Bar (alcohol): go to St. Louis
Westport for massive alcohol consumption (too crowded on weekends).

Fun for the whole family:
Union Station (Science museum + theatres + other fun stuff).
The WWI memorial was recently reopened which is across the street from Union Station.
The plaza is cool but extremely yuppie/snobby
There is a Royals game on Aug. 13th vs. the New York Yankees (tickets are very cheap + parking is simple because the Royals parking lot is also the Chiefs parking lot).
You'll be happy with Worlds of Fun on a weekday

That's all I can think of off the top of my head; PM if you have more questions.

Arthur Bryants. Nothing compares to their BBQ! MMMMMMM good!
Will have to find an excuse to visit my sister in law in Lawrence so we can stop by AB. Gotta get more of their BBQ sauce too! :)
