Edit a device name in registry?

Hi Everyone,
Can anyone help me in changing the device description (ie name) of a driver in windows 7? I need to rename a DAC pci card in order for a piece of software to recognize it (DT322->HJDT322). The instructions make it seem straightforward in XP, but I am having issues in windows 7. I heard I need to edit it in the registry, but it seems like a hot mess and I am not sure how I can even find that value to edit.

Thanks!

You can always use the search option to look for the particular name in your registry. Maybe it is also getting the name information from the drivers.

I would back up your computer before doing this.

And, sometimes the name is based on data obtained from the device's firmware. In that case, you may be destroying a needed link.

Yeah - back up the Registry before editing.

Sounds like the software in question needs an update patch. Have you contacted the authors?

Thanks a lot for the replies. I tried the ctrl+f to find the entries, but when I alter them, it doesn't seem to change anything in system preferences. Is there an update button I need to do or something like that? I tried restarting, but it appears that the values have reverted to the previous configuration.

That is excellent advice contacting the authors of the software, but unfortunately in this case they are not very responsive. They are a small company that makes instruments and they have pretty bad customer service in my past experience and this time was no exception.
