EDIT: 10Q!!!! connecting 2 comp to dorm ethernet

we're not allowed to use routers or we might lose our internet priveleges, so my only hope of connecting my two comps to access the internet is with my little Netgear 4 port 10-T hub. my main computer is running win2k and the other win98. but i can't even get my win2k rig to access the internet. everything works fine when i plug the ethernet from the wall directly into my comp. but when i plug it into my hub and have another cable connect from that to my ethernet card, nada. are there some settings i'm forgetting to set? i've been waiting all quarter to get this figured out.

Could be cables.

Wall to NIC is not the same as Wall to Hub.

If your Hub has an Uplink try to connect the Cable from the wall to the Uplink.

if i just make a small network with just my two comps, i'm sure i could get them to see each other, since i've made small networks with my sis's comp and my mom's comp before. i've tried connecting from the wall to the uplink port. the data-transfer light was flashing, but my comp still wasn't connected to the internet. any other suggestions?

What Jack said. Sounds like a cabling layer problem. Do you have standard cables or cross-overs?

i'm just using regular cat 5 untwisted pair cables from fry's. should be unshielded if i remember correctly X_x.

That's most likely the problem. One of the cables (the wall port to the hub-UPLINK) should be a cross-over cable, not a standard cable. This has to do with the wire pairings within the cable, not the shielding. Then your "normal" cable should work fine from the hub to each of your PCs.

Nots not correct. If your going into the uplink port you don't need a cross over cable. Thats the whole point of the uplink port. If your going into a regular port you would need then need a crossover cable.

Hey, I'm "Golden" now. Doesn't that mean that whatever I post is *by definition* correct??😉

OK, so I was incorrect about the uplink port. 😱 I still think it's a cabling problem of some sort.

PS: Isn't it nice to know that *wrong* advice will be so quickly refuted? Go ATF!! 😀

ugh. i'm never gonna get this thing figured out. but techinically, if i get a crossover cable (which i have no idea what it is but i'll figure it out), and connect it to a regular port without uplink, it should work beautifully?
edit: actually, what i'm concerned with (being a network novice) is if i plug the wall into port one, how do ports 2-4 know to look to port one for an internet connection? it obviously would know that port one has no computer, so what would prompt it to look there? is there a setting i'm forgetting about? i dont' see anything in internet options.

<< we're not allowed to use routers or we might lose our internet priveleges, so my only hope of connecting my two comps to access the internet >>

- careful, that means read you service terms and whether or not you can even attach a hub. I'd suggest contacting technical support for your options.

OK, what you you need to do is establish good link with whatever network device you're trying to connect to. This means you'll need to get a link light on your hub. A crossover cable into any regular port on your hub will work fine for this (if you don't get a link light then try using your uplink port with a regular cat5 cable) if neither of these options work then buy another hub or cable. If you can't get link no need to go any further.

Get that going and we'll go from there.

i was in your exact same situation--- i had to use a hub,
ran a cross over wire from the ethernet outlet on the wall to the hub- and then regulare wires going from the hub to the computers...
but now i'm evil and am using a router anyways.

your school may also have splitters that you can use.

i'll try to plug into my uplink port again tonite. should the port be turned on to uplink or normal? heck, i'll try both. i think i got the port with uplink on to blink a bit as if data were being transferred, but i couldn't get online.

thank you guys SOOO much. yea, it works. i hooked to the uplink port like i did last time, but this time i rebooted (can't believe i was too lazy to do it last time). well..things are good and i'm online. thanx guys.😀

update: yep. both computers see each other, data transfers are fast, and life is good. now i can clear some space for now until my new burner comes.
