EDGE vs GPRS

I'm a current Tmobile sidekick user and the bandwidth of the GPRS system is slow at best and I'm thinking about upgrading to Tmobiles MDA(once it's released). Will I notice any speed increase using a EDGE phone compared to a GPRS one? Anyone have any Idea when most of the cell carriers will be offering ture 3G connections? It is my understanding that EDGE is a step between GPRS and ture 3G.

HSDPA (first gen 3g for gsm world) is in trials, should be available soon, EDGE is quite a bit faster than just GPRS. if you dont want to stick to GSM just get a CDMA phone which can do EVDO, that is much faster than EDGE, HSDPA (3g in gsm world) will be about the same or just a bit faster than EVDO

Cingular has HSDPA working in quite a few markets and is expecting to have most metropolitan areas to be rolled out by the end of this year.

Yeh, the advantage over DO is you can do voice and data simeltaneousy with HSDPA, , probably by the end of the year they should have it in most areas like EVDO network is available now

They're saying no HSDPA-compatible WM5 phones until '07.

Get an MDA, I'm going to try to get one Monday.

Can't wait until Sprint and Verizon start testing EVDO Rev B which will have speeds of up 72 mbps, with the use of QAM64 Modulation. We should see testing in markets in 2008 for EVDO Rev B.

Though with sprint investment in TDCDMA they might move that standard. Advantage there is TDCDMA is expected evolution of WCDMA, so it will allow sprint to hop on the world phone, but this probably won't be for a long time. TDCDMA is still only in the development phase.

GSM doesn't have 3G yet? god, why the hell would you ever use that crap?

good going omnipotent european governments, forcing your people to use inferior technology

What are you talking about? Europe has 3G. The US doesn't.

The question is why does Europe have better technology that the so called most powerfull nation?

Even Japan has better tech then US. They have 1Gbps wired data connections into people homes for christ's sake Why am I stuck with 5Mbps?

Its called UMTS and Europe has had it for a while. In fact, unlike the US they are skipping EDGE and going straight to UMTS (IIRC, only france and italy are rolling out EDGE, where they're planning to use it for rural areas, while the cities get UMTS).

Don't expect Sprint or Verizon to even bother with EVDO Rev. B or EVDV. Sprint is moving fast and furious to a WiMax/WiBro network and I don't forsee them spending any money on EVDV. EVDO is a remote possibility for Verizon and even more remote for Sprint. Verizon may do it to get a edge on Sprint, since Verizon's EV network has been around for a couple of years. From what I understand, it's a fairly cheap upgrade path to Rev B EVDO. Rev B EVDO still does not give you simultaneous voice/data, that is EVDV.

If Verizon makes the jump to Rev B, Sprint probably will too. Keep in mind that Sprints EV network has only been live for about 4 months, so I don't see them being too keen to upgrade it so soon. They have made a lot of movement towards a WiMax/WiBro however.

Yea, EVDO Rev B point is to give you very high speed, even faster than wired FIOS speeds, not simultaneous voice/data. But why would you need simultaneous voice and data. I don't see why Verizon doesn't jump to EVDO Rev B when it allows for a major jump in speed.

Because the US is vastly larger and more sparce than Japan/HK/Europe metros. Genius.

i thought EVDO was more like 2.75G. 😉

i use EVDO every day and it's AMAZING.

EVEN japan?

i'd say EVEN S Korea, but saying EVEN japan as if it's embarassing for the US to be behind Japan seems a bit extreme.

however, S Korea has 1 Gbps data connections even in the countryside, never mind Seoul. 😉

The EVDO Standard allows for higher speeds than even HSDPA. It is 3G.

cool. i love my EVDO. 😉

the only thing lately i've been thinking is, should i switch from Verizon to Sprint.

what do you think? they are both CDMA does that mean that Sprint can leech of Verizon Wirelesses Network?

What is the transfer speed of EDGE anyways?

I believe the best possible speed for GRPS is like 14.4k(I Think you need to be a foot from the tower to get that type of speed though)

I've heard that EDGE is around 384kbps but what's the real world average?
