Edge is the most secure browser

Accordin to NSS labs, Microsoft Edge is the most secure browser, and by a fairly wide margin by the look of it 😎

Chrome came in second, and Firefox came in last. Once again, I will never understand why Firefox is so popular, especially on these forums. It's the slowest, and least secure of the major browsers.😕

Browser security is one of those things that no one thinks about, until it's too late..

Firefox with NoScript is #1
 
Firefox is junk, and Chrome is almost there. Really though, how many regular people buy a computer and install things like noscript and adblock?

That's a good point. Most don't mess with extensions at all. As such, Edge is the perfect browser for non techy people, as it is highly resistant to socially engineered malware (the type that you're most likely to encounter) according to NSS labs..
 
Buuuuut, Edge it also has Flash enabled by default which is another attack vector. I'm happy with Firefox with noscript, adblock and no flash or java.
 
It seems to me that this test isn't testing how secure the software is at all, but how good each provider's phishing blacklists are.

The only bit that makes me possibly think otherwise is this quote:

NSS Labs wrote their own malware? Or does NSS Labs collect zero-day malware and not inform the software makers of it so that they can test the software with it? What does this even mean?

Flash was still too prevalent to be completely disabled when Windows 10 launched last year. But now, I'd say that it would make better sense for them to disable it. Chrome I think is close to having it disabled as well.. Perhaps by the next major update, they will disable it completely..

That said, the version of Flash that's integrated into Edge isn't the same as the one that you download from Adobe's website..

They tested against both phishing attacks and socially engineered malware.. Of the two, S.E.M is by far the most dangerous I think, and the type that you're most likely to run into these days. I know lots of people that have gotten infected by S.E.M.

I'm assuming it's zero day malware.. If you want to read up on the specifics of the test, you can download the report directly from NSSlabs themselves, with the caveat that you'll have to provide some personal info.

Edge is also better for battery life, and with most people switching to laptops and tablet/2-in1s that's a very important thing for the muggles as well. I don't use Firefox at all, but when I use Chrome on my HP Spectre x2, the battery lasts about two hours less than using Edge at the same screen brightness.
 
So my take away from this is, if you are ignorant and or stupid then Edge is for you. M$ could market that way and ignorant and stupid will not buy into it because of the embarrassment.
 
FF because the fun and power of it is not in default settings. I tend to use the speed optimized lawlietfox or pcxfirefox x64 builds with ublock and fasterfox tweaks.
 
I really like FF for it's features, especially extensions like ublock and privacy badger. Chrome is owned by Google so you don't know what kind of data it's leaking, and Edge/IE is well, Microsoft, yuck. At least they have tabbed browsing now so there's that. I really do wish FF devs would get their act together though, FF has turned into a pig, part of the issue is how they keep rushing major versions way too fast. Slow down, take a step back, cleanup all the code, optimize it, maybe even rewrite it from scratch, but do something. Firefox used to be considered a lightweight alternative to Mozilla (which was a browser in itself) but then it just turned into bloat.

That said every time I try to switch I end up going back to it. One thing that would be interesting is a chrooted install of a browser. That would be very secure I imagine.
 
i have had my first 2 viruses or trojans in years using windows 10. defender didn't even detect anything wrong until my windows 10 pc started slowing down. decided to get a free antivirus and it removed them.
 
Just curious, which trojans were they and which AV removed them?

I'm using firefox because it's more customizable and doesn't ask you hundred million things when you browse just like chrome does(notifications, translations...etc) and is kind of feature-rich, lots of good addons, chrome sux and is not any faster, good for edge that it is so secure when it has no features. It's true, the browser scene hasn't really moved on much in all those years, I used opera until firefox came out, been testing chrome and IE at some point for short periods but that's it. It's only major browser that is not so bad, I mean the IE is niche now as well as opera, or Avant browser. I definitely prefer chrome on my phone, the android version of firefox is terrible.

Whilst Edge is definitely not as feature laden as the other browsers, the Redstone update definitely helped to bring it up considerably in that respect by adding extensions. Not many, but it's a start.

But Edge has some nice advantages of its own as well, to include better security, very high performance, and the best hardware acceleration for video decoding by far.. That's why I like Edge, because it's a very lean, high performing browser without the bloat of Chrome, but still has solid functionality.

I got hacked, exploited, whatever, for the first time in years, less than two months after switching my main rig to Win10.
 
A recent study of the browser market by Computerworld shows that in the last month alone, the "super-secure" Edge has lost over 40 million users to Chrome and Firefox, despite the two ranking lower on NSS' tests.

This would be because most people believe due to all Windows 10 privacy issues Edge can't be trusted either, Microsoft shot them selves in the foot here.
 
I didn't even realize they added extensions for edge until today. I'm trying it out now and overall I am pretty happy with how edge is performing.

That is why you use a hybrid Chrome based browser like the Iridium browser that removes the google stuff or Brave browser that removes the google stuff and has built in HTTPS everywhere security, ad blocker, script blocker and fingerprint protection, and several password managers like Lastpass.

I have been using both both, Brave is fairly new so they are still working out some kinks but out of the box most secure browser I have ever used.
