Edgar Martinez hangs them up.

I guess there's not many baseball fans here. Edgar Martinez, DH for the Mariners, has retired, effective immediately. I knew this was his last year, but I would have liked for him to stick around long enough to get a proper sendoff from the team and the fans.

By that logic, Randy Johnson should have retired long ago. (Dbacks 31.5 GB) :D

Edgar was a great hitter for so many years. As a Yankee fan, I will always respect him.

Martinez is leaving the game with a .312 career batting average, 305 home runs, 1244 RBI and a .420 on-base percentage.

He was a great hitter back in his prime. I thought he was much closer to 3,000 hits though....his profile on EPSN.com says he's got roughly 2200 hits in his 18 seasons.

sucks to see him go. i guess a lot of people wont know who is, since he isnt crushing out homers left and right, but he is a great clutch, consistent hitter, who year after year has put impressive dh numbers, and even has a couple batting titles underneath his belt. i dont doubt that he will be h.o.f. material in 5 years.

I don't think he's H.O.F. material. Great hitter, but not a HOF type hitter.

Sad to see Edgar retire. I always liked him as a player. He's seriously one of the most underrated hitters of the recent era, along with Frank Thomas.

Edgar Martinez before this season:
74th highest batting average of all time
17th highest OBP of all time
25th highest OPS of all time
52nd highest SLG of all time
33rd highest OPS+ of all time!

His value was that he got on base a TON of times, something that most fans don't appreciate. They would rather see homeruns or a high batting average.

Too bad that he was a DH, as many people hate that 'position'.

A while back he built a big house in my town, kinda surprising as my town is a whopping 15k without the college, his phone number was even in our phone book

but you guys have to realize, half those names listed haven't retired yet. you are eligible for the hall 5 years after retirement. who recently has retired that can knock edgar out of contention come that 5 years? thats the basis im going off that he'll get in. his numbers are decent enough.

As an Angels' fan I'm sad to see him go as well. Seems like a good guy and he was good for the game. Classy players are hard to find in this day and age.
