ECS RS482-M

Is it any good? The Fry's combo has this board with the Venice 3500+, basically the MB is like free. But I wonder if this board is anyone, or would most likely end up spending more to get another board. Thanks very much for help!

That should be a nice setup. I don't know if that particular board is overclockable, but the predecessor RS480-M board wasn't that great stock, hitting mostly about 220-230MHz system bus. Hardforum guy made a modded BIOS for the original RS480-M that some people have gotten to work with overclocks well over 250MHz system bus, so there's hope.

Other differences between the two boards... the RS482-M has the new revision of the chipset that supposedly runs cooler. It also has optional 1394A (Firewire 800) instead of the original's standard 1394.

The USB and HDD controller on the Southbridge is questionable. ATI Southbridges have never performed well. Using SATA may be the limiting factor in the lousy overclocks on these particular boards.

Still, it sounds like an interesting board and is pretty much free with the CPU.

1394A is Firewire 400. Revision "B" is the Firewire 800.

I hope the south bridge is not ATI and it's the ULi ones instead.

Ati Southbridges are "underperforming" to say the least.

Underperforming only if used with external HDD but will do nice with everything else.

SATA2 is only a new number to give impression that there is something new, but rather useless right now..

I won't hesitate to get a board with ATI SB, but I need fast USB 2 for my external HDD. Otherwise, I won't care.

Hi,

I recently bought a computer from Mesh that was supposed to have a :-
ASUS A8N-VM - Nforce 410 PCI-Express Mainboard - Micro ATX motherboard. in conjunction with a AMD Athlon 64 3200+ Venice 0.09u Socket 939.

After running various systme info tools I believe I have the right processor but an MSI RS482-M motherboard. (it's got RS482-M written on it but none of the system diagnostics tools name a board manufacturer).

Two of the reasons I bought this PC were that the MB got good reviews and the general consensus was that it is easy to overclock and if things start grinding to a hault I should easily be able to increase the clock speed from 2GHz to 2.5.
Have I been ripped off or should I keep quiet and think myself lucky?

I thought I was going mad. I ordered a similar system to you with a dual core athlon and ended up getting the same motherboard, plus the same doubts/questions.

Mesh service seems poor - 10 mins waiting on the phone, no response, plus no response to my emails after 3 days 🙁 I guess this is what you get for 3 yrs on site?

Anyway did you make any progress with this issue?

Either way, guys, you didn't get what you ordered, particularly if it's the ECS model...

Neither one is a Nforce 6100 board, althought the MSI is definitely the better of the two shown above, imho...
