ECS PT800CE-A CPU Temp

under heavy are you sure its not a fan hitting highter RPM
also is this a P4 board
 
Nope the fan isn't going faster. It's a squeal, like something I hear near high voltage power lines. Yes this is a P4 board, with a P4-3.0E.
 
Already got some AS on it. Cleaned it off, re-applied. Same. The heatsink wasn't hot at all when I took it apart, neither was the CPU or the area surrounding it.

I say this mobo has issues. But then, $159 for this combo, oh how did I lose.
 
Yup, the frys deal. So I took the CPU to another computer. Yup, same temp problem using a different heatsink.

I'm going to have to toss this junk back to them.
 
I think it's mis-reporting. No CPU can survive 100 C. Transistor junctions begin to melt at 90 C.

If it was 100 C is 212 F. it would SMELL BURNT and the heatsink would be impossible to touch without seriously burning you.

My sister's Duron 1.8Ghz got up to 121C (BIOS reported, I'm sure it was a little less) before it started crashing and locking up.

One year on, it's still working perfectly.

[Edit] A 14" fan on full-bore for fifteen minutes was required so I could touch the heatsink.
 
If the HS was installed correctly and it was cool, then the chip was not at 100C.

Run throttlewatch to see if it is really that hot.
 
Just switched motherboards. Now it reports it running at a good 50C idle, 73C full load. Normal temps?

I'll have to check out throttlewatch later tonight.

C'mon, you've been here five going-on five years and you haven't posted yours specs? 😛 😉

73C load is about right for a 3.6Ghz Prescott on stock cooling, albeit higher than any of us would like, I'd imagine.
However, as the throttling temperature for Prescotts is 94C (yes, I have tested it) and the shutdown is a good 20C higher than that, there's not much to worry about.
 
Problem solved. Got throttlewatch. Noticed it throttling majorly. Tossed in new CPU. Huge difference in performance. WoW now runs at 85 fps instead of 35fps. SuperPI is twice as fast. And the temps, 36C idle, 50C load. Not bad for a P4-3.0E.

So who wants an ECS PT800CE-A on the cheap, heh.
