I am looking sub $1k notebook, basically I wouldn't be playing game but I kind of used to my P4-2.0 desktop system's speed already.

And I come across ECS notebook for $782? (AMD XP 1500, 128MB SDRAM...yada..yada..yada...)

I am going to use this notebook mainly as remote desktop, NOT laptop...so size, battery life is not exactly the issue...
but, what's the catch???????????? And it can be upgrade via regular 168pin PC133 RAM? huh?

Nvm.

I'm curious as to why the store calls all it's computers ESC desknotes, not ECS desknotes. Are they different companies?

Someone please hit me w/ the hammer w/ big "NO"!

Just feel like it is a great deal, isn't it? (judging no one is actually carry notebook around but their PDA)

ECS, ESC - must be a typo.

There are also other brands using ECS Desknote, and rebadge it to use their own brand names.

It's not a real notebook, no battery inside, must use external battery or power source.
It's a desktop computer in a notebook chassis.

The reason they call it a desknote is because it supposedly combines desktop performance with a laptop portability. It is using a normal desktop CPU and RAM but an IBM travelstar hd. the cost is pretty cheap cuz its only desktop parts besides the chassis and hd. u can upgrade using normal desktop ram and u can even upgrade the cpu if u want. more info on it HERE I have personally used the desknote you mentioned and they are pretty good. its on the heavy side and you don't have a built in battery but it can easily blow away any laptop with those specs and price. If you don't need to use your computer outside of work or home. It is a pretty good bargain. Hope this helps.

thanks guys........(I was hoping more criticism ;) )

Now this is what I don't get............

I have eye on Shuttle's SS40G for quite sometimes. (but just can't eat the cost at $310)
Then I will have to get a 256MB DDR roughly around $55
AMD XP 1600 at $52
Maxtor 20GB at $65
Aopen DVD rom at $40
Keyboard + mouse at $15
Cheapo speaker at $10
56K modem at $10
total close to.................$600

And I can get one of the same spec + Notebook-size Desknote including 14.1" TFT for $800??????

Someone got to have something bad to say about this...otherwise, I would think this is actually pretty good deal for people need "small size" PC??????
