ECS mobo wont POST. dont understand why?

first, let me list out the components of my computer:

antec sx600
enermax EG365P-VE(FC) (350w ps)
ecs k7s5a
athlon xp 1600
256 crucial ddr
tried multiple agp and pci video cards

the rest of the components are all removed right now, and i dont think are of much interest... so here's what happened.

i put this computer together about 4 months ago and it has been working great, i would even dare say near perfectly. its been on continuously since then, except for spring break, and the occasional shut down/reboot. its been on non-stop without even rebooting for the last one month. so i was getting out of bed to go to the computer the other day and right as my feet hit the ground i hear it shut down and try to reboot, but nothing. ever since then its been dead.

i removed every single component except video and ram first.. the fans all come on, but no beeps, and apparently no POST. i cleared the CMOS (several times in fact), took out the ram and video, same thing. this led me to conclude that it is probably either the cpu or mobo, but i still cant be sure since im not getting any kind of feedback. so i removed my cpu, and tried out my friends spare athlon thunderbird 1.4. same thing. so now i feel like ive narrowed it to the mobo, and also possibly the power supply. but like i said, i have no idea. also, although my feet didnt hit the floor very hard at all, it seems odd that it was so coincidental. i tried to think of what might have shaken and gone wrong in that way... ive tried reseating the mobo to make sure its not making contact with the case. i still have yet to try another power supply, ill do it tomorow and post an update. but i feel like im going in circles with this, with no progress or results.

ive read that this board can be flaky and all, but it just seems strange that it could work so well for so long and then randomly go out the way it did. surely there must be something i can do, short of getting another motherboard. it would hurt to have to resort to that. i mean, i would at least like to know why first.

if anyone knows whats wrong or has got any clues or ideas that i should try out, please let me know.

thanks!

I agree, either motherboard or powersupply. I've had supplies die where my fans worked, 12V rail was working (or at least enuf to run the fans) but there was no output on the 5V line so the mobo appeared dead.

It does sound like the motherboard.

As for the board being flakey, in the last 2 weeks I've replaced 2 Intel MBs that had the same symptoms. I guess Intels are flakey, too.

This doesn't really help, but my friend had a similar problem and it turned out to be the cpu. We changed out everything and had the same problems ruled it down to the motherboard and CPU, so we replaced the cpu and his system worked fine.

I've read about many people having this problem...

I really don't think the processor is actually bad.

My heat is a little high which might account for some problems, not sure yet... in the high 50C range.

I can Post with my FSB at 100 but not 133 where it is supposed to be.

well to update my current situation... i RMA'ed my board in, and they sent me a brand new replacement board. this one looks a little different than the other one did, and is version 3.1. i dont remember what version the other was. but anyways, i havent been able to get this board to post at all. this time i managed to convince my friend to take apart his whole computer to go on a testing spree of parts. he's got a gigabyte board, and we were able to get all my components, power supply and all, to work on his board, except unfortunately my athlon xp. however, with all his components, including his athlon thunderbird, which we know to be working, still couldnt get my mobo to POST.

ive seen a lot of people saying to down the FSB to 100, i cant really do that without going in to the BIOS can i? seeing as how i cant even get it to POST to be able to get to the BIOS. clearing the CMOS wouldnt set the FSB to 100 would it? if it does, that doesnt help me.

heres something i was wondering from before.. the motherboard that i sent in, and my athlon xp were on continuously for 4 months. i have a volcano 5 fan/heatsink, and i used arctic silver on it. but when i put the heatsink in 5 months ago, i didnt follow their instructions completely for applying the arctic silver. they wanted me to go get 10% isopropyl alchohol or something like that, and wipe the heatsink clean, make sure no particles blah blah blah. basically i thought it was a little on the anal side, so i just scraped off the thermal pad it came with, and applied some arctic silver on top of that, spread it evenly, and thought it was cool. i mean it was working for so long. was it dumb of me to not be as anal as they wanted? i thought it might be possible that i burnt out the cpu and motherboard..... but no, its a freakin brand new board. either way something is wrong with my cpu too now. im pulling my hair out on this, and am getting ready to just buy a whole new board and chip. which sucks.

i changed to 133 in bios and it wouldn't post... couldn't get anything

so I cleared the CMOS and it came up since it went back to 100. 100 is the default unless someone changed the defaults, if that is even possible. I'm just using it 100 now so I have a computer and the gaming performance so much better than what I had with my previous computer I'm not going to complain too much about not being able to go to 133. Hopefully I can get it fixed though.

I have some bookmarks at home to some other forums discussing the same problem. After work I'll put them up. Some talk about PSU voltage and quirks with the SiS ship overheating and other sh!t like that. Warm boot problems and the such.Nothing definite though.

Everything you have said I have read other people have problems with too. Leading me to believe that your processor is fine.

It sounds like you might be having aproblem with your installation of your mobo. Did you try removing your mobo completely from the case when you tested with your friends CPU? Your mobo may be shorting out somewhere in the case.
