ECS laptop modem issues

My ECS 732 laptop is having a wild time installing drivers for the modem after a reformat (installed XP Pro). I downloaded the drivers for the "SmartLink 56K Modem" from the ECS site and others as well. The Windows XP versions all caused the system to blue screen and restart midway through the install.

When I ran into this problem, I tried the Win2k drivers. They installed beautifully, but I cannot query the modem. The system gives the excuse that the COM port was already opened by another application (no third party software is running, of this I am sure). When I try to change the COM port it uses (3 is the default), it told me that the port I selected was in use by another application. I tried many of the *256* that were in there (should there even be this many?).

Does this sound like a problem with the drivers? If so, how can I successfully install the XP version? If not, what should I do?

Any help is greatly appreciated.
