Peter I just got in some ECS L7VMM3's with what seems like a soldered-on mobile Athlon XP.

POST screen:pRO2300A+
BIOS string: 62-1126-001131-00101111-040201-VIA-K7-L7VMM3-
After-POST screen shows 128K L1 and 256 L2 cache 1200MHz

Memtest 86+ shows:
Athlon XP (0.18) 1200MHz
L1 128k 7361MB/s
L2 256k 2443MB/s
memory 407MB/s

System properties in WinME (clients OS) picks it up as an:
Computer Authentic: mobile AMD Athlon(tm) XP-M 1400+

Sisoft Sandra 2k3 lists the same thing with a 100MHz FSB, CPU voltage of 1.45V, stepping AMI mAO 1.2GHz and 12x multiplier.

Is it an Athlon? Palomino? T-bred? ? Edit: spelling, etc.

That indeed looks like a mobile Athlon XP.

On those integrated-CPU boards, ECS are eating through almost-obsolete stock of AMD and VIA processors, apparently. They now seem to have consumed all the old Durons and moved on to low Athlon speed grades.

What processor model it is should be readable from WCPUID or something. 3-Spitfire, 4-Thunderbird, 6-Palomino, 8-Thoroughbred/Applebred, 10-Barton/Thorton.

With the Athlon XP moniker, it should be at least a Palomino.

OK WCPUID Version 3.1a:

Processor: Mobile AMD XP(Model 8)
Platform: Socket A
Vendor: Authentic AMD
CPU type: Original OEM Processor
Family: 6 Model 8 Stepping 11 0
Family: 6.............8........................0
Name String: mobile AMD Athlon(tm) XP-M 1400+
Internal clock: 1200.05MHz
System Bus: 200.01MHz DDR
System Clock: L1 I-64k L2 256k
System Clock:L1 D-64K
Supported: MMX, MMX+, SSE, 3Dnow!, 3Dnow+, SSE2 not supported

These will make the center of great budget office rigs. Edit: spelling, etc.

They sure do. I've got one on the way myself.

They are indeed Athlon XP-M chips, running at 1200MHz by default (12x100). However, the XP-M makes next to no heat, and can overclock like a beast. Bump those puppies up to a 133FSB and watch the smoke fly.

MercenaryForHire let us know what CPU is soldered on yours when you get it.

Here's the ECS
linky if anyone's interested.

It should be the same as yours - the Athlon XP-M at 12x100MHz (Pro2300A PR spec). The Pro2800A PR boards get 133MHz FSB XP-Ms, apparently. Core-wise, I think those are both T-breds.

I'll post confirmation later on. I'm also hoping to pop the HSF off and slap on Ye Olde Zalman to revert to passive-cooling. Fan noise sucks.

Nice, a Thoroughbred Athlon-XP. Potential buyers be aware that the processors on those boards change every five seconds - that's the nature of what ECS are doing there, using up cheap stock of obsoleting CPUs.

Hello guys;

I was wondering if you know which processor (AMD XP-m) is used in the L7VMM3 combo w/ the AMD pro2800+ (running at 1.6Ghz, I think)?
Do AMD-XP mobile cpus work on desktop socket A motherboards?
And do you know if there is a way to mod the AMD XP-m to 512K L2 cache? Like how the Thorton cpu can be modded to 512K L2 cache like the Barton core on the AMD XP line.

Im planning to build a custom pc case using passive cooling or with a silent fan is necessary and the AMD XP-m processor seems to be good choice because of its availability, price, and low heat dissipation (45W?).

Thanks a lot!

Mobile AMD CPUs do work on desktop mainboards - what won't work is the dynamic speed and voltage switching those CPUs can do to save power. Mobile Athlon/Duron use the same socket as the desktop parts, so yes, if you want to bring power consumption down, you can put a mobile one into a desktop board. There are three levels - Desktop Replacement, Standard, and Low Power. Left to right, they get slower, cooler, and more expensive.

Well, after some slight difficulty (*understatement*) I got my board and am installing XP on it. As soon as I get a functional GUI, I'll give you guys a full dump of the CPU info. Judging by the BIOS though, it's the Athlon XP-M 1400+ underclocked at 12x100MHz FSB.

Let's see if I can't push it a little. ;)

The 1400+ isn't underclocked at 12x100, it's actually supposed to run at that speed.

Here in Germany that board model now ships with an Athlon XP-M 1900+ (1600/133 MHz) :D

If it were a genuine XP-M 1400+, it would run at 1200/133 with a 9x multiplier, not the 100FSB and 12x I've got.

The final verdict is...

See. I'm right ;)

It _is_ a genuine mobile Athlon XP 1400+. They _were_ available in 100 MHz bus flavors, up to 1500 MHz.

The mobile Athlons always used to be (and still are) one step behind in bus frequency. No surprise there.

The list is incomplete. See AMD's own documentation - document #20734, Processor Recognition. Pg. 33 tells you that model 8 "mobile Athlon XP-M" did exist with FSB200, up to 1500 MHz/1800+. The 1400+ is no exception.

The FSB200 version wasn't exactly popular with notebook makers. Guess why they now end up on the "leftovers party" at ECS ;)

Well, that was stupid of them. One of the major advantages they were pushing with the T-Bred XP-Ms was the 266 FSB - no wonder this got swept under the rug. Guess that means no overclocking for me. :(

Edit - The OP has a 0.18u chip, and mine is 0.13u ...

They've been made to give notebook makers an upgrade path for existing FSB200 gear.

Model 8 is .13u "Thoroughbred", we're still on the same page ;)

hello

i have the same mobo as yours
here ist my configuration
http://free.pages.at/sultan123/test/cpuz.htm

Modell "L7VMM3 v1.0C Pro2600A+"
"Pro2600A+" = mobile AthlonXP 1400+ (1200MHz) FSB266

is it possible to make the mobo or cpu a little bit faster ?

and what is the difference between the

Modell "L7VMM3 v1.0C Pro3000A+"
"Pro3000A+" = mobile AMD AthlonXP 1900+ (1600MHz) FSB200

and the

Modell "L7VMM3 v1.0C Pro2600A+"
"Pro2600A+" = mobile AthlonXP 1400+ (1200MHz) FSB266

No overclocking on these mainboards. They're made to be cheap workhorses. The difference between the two models you gave? You have the answer right there, different processors.

So you got a 1400+/266 there? You were a tad luckier than the others, then ;)
