Hey everyone,

Newbie at these forums here. I recently put together a computer for my girlfriend's little brother, who likes to play Counter-Strike alot. Here's the original setup:

-ECS L4VXA2 motherboard
-2.4 Ghz P4 processor
-a stick of 512MB DDR 2700 Mushkin Ram (w/o heat shield)
-a cheap $30 tower with power supply included
-Gainward GeForce FX 5200 128MB
-Maxtor 120 GB HD
-running Windows XP

The problem though, since I've built the computer for them, it's been having some problems playing 3D games. This mostly happens when her brother plays CS; the computer just randomly restarts. In fact, it was only happening when they were playing CS in the beginning, it would just restart at random times (sometimes not for a few hours, and sometimes within 5 minutes). I figured that since it only happened when he played CS (which was the only game he'd play), I figured it might be the video card, so I switched my reliable Radeon 8500 into his computer...no change. It still did the same random restarts. After looking around some forums, alot of people who were having this problem came to the conclusion that it was the RAM's fault, and after buying a stick of more expensive RAM, it worked out fine. I decided to do this, and went out and bought a stick of Corsair 512 MB 2700 DDR RAM w/ heat shield. It worked great for a few days...but then it started doing the same thing, and it even made WarCraft III lock up in the same way. The computer never restarts when it's not playing any 3D games, surfing the net is fine, and leaving the computer on overnight is also fine. I think I've eliminated the possibilities that it might be the RAM and the video card...I'm now thinking it could either be the power supply or perhaps the motherboard itself. I'm thinking about returning this motherboard soon and purchasing an Asus mobo, which I've heard is famous for its stability. Anyone have any suggestions? Thanks for any, in advance. Sorry about the long post, but I had to make sure I wrote everything down.

Its prolly the power supply... normally I wouldn't use a $30 PSU especially if it came in a case that all totalled $30

I would make sure its not a heat issue first by monitoring the heat while running the CPU at 100%... If you see the temp rise and then the system restart then you might have a bad chip or bad contact with the heatsink

If the temp doesnt rise but the system restarts I'd say 99% chance the PSU is garbage.

I have to agree with Crazymofo. It certainly could be the motherboard, but I think you should try a different power supply first. Any power supply that comes with a case that only costs $30 can't be that great. I would check out the Enlight 360 watt, and the more expensive Sparkle and Fortran 300watt units. (The cheaper 300W Sparkle and Fortran units only offer 13.0A on the 12V rail, you want more than that for a P4 or XP system) I am running a Sparkle 350W unit for over 18 months now on an overclocked XP system with no issues. I have a pair of Enlight 420W units in a couple of other overclocked XP systems, also running great. Check these out:
Fortran 300W
Sparkle 300W
Enlight 360W
I think these are the best available for under $40 shipped. Good luck.
