Hi guys,

My brother finally got upgraded to an AMD mobo so we had to rebuild his system entirely. Here are the specs
AMD 3500+
ECS kv2 lite
ATI radeon 9800pro (actually carried over from his previous system)
XP Pro

Now, after installing windows on the new hard drive, we did all the necessary things (upgrade to SP2 and get all patches, latest catalyst drivers, directx 9.0c) and he installed Deus Ex: Invisible Wars and Morrowind. He had no problems with those games and noticed a huge difference in performance in Morrowind (naturally, going from a 2.4ghz P4 to a 3500+). Anyhow, then a friend of mine told me about the snowball fight feature added to Guild Wars so he installed it and started redownloading all the content. Now, he plays GW a lot, and actually had been playing it the day before on his old machine with that same 9800pro. Anyway, we get in game and we're messing around in one of the towns and his game freezes, his screen goes black, and he bsod's. The problem was an infinite loop caused by ati2dvag. I ran dxdiag and the first time it crashed on one of the drawing tests, but after rebooting it ran the tests several times without incident. Anyway, long story short, I tried at least 4 different catalyst drivers, made sure he had the latest mobo drivers, and it still won't work. I also have a 9800pro so I installed the same drivers I use and it still crashed. After a bunch more testing (swapping out RAM, etc) the only thing that is left is the mobo - I have an ASUS mobo that works fine. We are both using the same drivers for our onboard sound (Realtek AC 97) so I doubt it is the sound card. I searched these forums and came up with this topic:

Does anyone know if the kv2 lite simply won't let us use the full potential of the 9800pro? I saw a "fix" online which consisted of switching the CPU to AGP control line to a PCI to PCI device - the crashing stopped but of course GW looked like crap. Additionally, we installed AOE3 on his machine and it BSODs every once in a while with the same problem (but not NEAR as frequently as GW). Morrowind and Deus Ex: IW are both fairly old games that don't take advantage of the latest directx stuff unlike GW and AOE3, which I think might be part of the issue. Anyway, please post any additional info you need or anything you've heard/experienced. Thanks!!!

I dont really know, but that could definitely be a problem. Did you run Checkdisk? Directx does have a lot to do with video cards, so maybe that is the problem. I would sell and get a better board. Try Gigabyte, Asus, or DFI, ince they won't give you any problems. Also see the Asrock hybrid board, since it has PCIe and AGP. Welcome to the forums.

Well we fixed it the other day. We stuck in a 9600xt that was lying around, installed its drivers and everything worked fine. The 9800pro worked fine the day before we transfered it into the new box so I guess the mobo had an issue with it. Weird... Thanks guys!
